I worked at NASW (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The organization follows Federal Government holidays/schedule.

    Cons

This organization is always in a financial deficit. They've had furloughs for the past couple of years. There was a recent layoff and all but one were minorities. The moral within the national office is tremendously down. There are a few toxic individuals working here (management) that give this organization a bad reputation and are rapidly causing things to decline.

    Advice to Management

There is no communication between management and staff. Learn to communicate with your staff and work together instead of against each other.

    Pros

In theory, the pillars of NASW are important and a worthwhile cause, however, membership dollars are wasted in this organization that is stuck in 1990.

    Cons

Unethical leaders, mismanagement of membership dollars. No upward mobility, no employee training or professional development. Complacency is rewarded.

    Advice to Management

    Find somewhere else to work.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at NASW full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Lots of great people and long-term employees who know their roles and responsibilities and work consistently to build relevant products and services to the membership. Depending on the department, some staff is highly productive despite the fact that salaries are modest.

    Cons

As a membership organization, priorities seem to be skewed toward pet projects of the executive staff who display a tendency to tell others what they need, instead of listening and responding to what members say they need. Not a lot of opportunity for growth or creativity. Financially precarious.

    Advice to Management

Hyper-management is not leadership. Listen to division directors and department managers. Operations should support innovation and solutions, not impose outdated policies and barriers to productivity.

    Pros

Access to lots of interesting national social work policy and practice information.

    Cons

Union and management politics made for strained relationships and distrust. Not a lot of room for upward mobility.
