I have been working at Northgate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The team I work with, location, added benefits, good career prospects, area manager strong at training and offering advice for progression within the company, always busy

    Cons

Long hours, pay ok, added benefits are reasonable, mixed bag of customers that can shout at you for no reason, need to have thick skin.

    Advice to Management

    Better contact from head office

I worked at Northgate (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Locality. Not many big businesses operate in County Durham so some specialist roles that aren't often found here. Package isn't bad compared to similar roles in the area but they will try and get you cheap and keep it that way.

    Cons

All major departments are headed by new people, none of whom have taken the time to understand the business but just want to make their own mark. Usually in the opposite direction to anyone else. Sales targets haven't been hit in months and the best sales people are leaving all the time.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people who know the business

I worked at Northgate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Hours Monday to Friday 8 till 5.30pm. No weekend working required. Customers were pleasant, staff at the branch were very helpful and a pleasure to work with.

    Cons

Management allowed to bully staff on a regular basis nothing done about it when complaints made. Poor rate of pay, employee engagement survets conducted but nothing done as a result. Promotions given to friends only. Nothing done to improve the poor morale in the branch.

    Advice to Management

Listen to what the staff need to do their job properly, management need to learn the job and the system rather than sitting upstairs in their office all day.

I worked at Northgate full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

No upside to working for a company that let's managers and employees bully their staff. The only good thing was leaving at the end of the day

    Cons

Bullying, over worked, under paid. Nepotism is rife in this company. You don't need any experience to get high up as long as you are best mates or a relative

    Advice to Management

    Wake up

I have been working at Northgate full-time

    Pros

A fabtastic team of dedicated people from senior managers to front of house branch staff. Significant growth potential will allow employees to develop skills across many functions in the business

    Cons

The company is going through huge change therefore pressure is intense however the rewards are potentially great

    Advice to Management

Listen to the experienced people on the ground and engage them with direction, reward and thanks. Be visible to them and available when they need you

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Northgate full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Northgate is a great company to work for. I've been here 3 years and have had great opportunity to learn and develop in my role and profession. It's very busy and fast paced and there is never a dull moment. There is a strong commoradery across the company and everyone pulls together to achieve the goals and targets.
While others have commented that there is no career development, I have seen lots of internal promotions take place and have personally experienced this. It may not happen in the form of a promotion but development does not always happen as a promotion.
Communication has improved dramatically over the 3 years i have been here which has helped with engagement but there is probably still a bit more to do.

    Cons

Being realistic there are always good days and bad days in any job. Northgate are not without their faults but they are also on a massive learning curve - for those who don't know, it was founded in 1981 but only really became Northgate proper in 2012 so in relative terms, its a new company. Like any new company, it makes mistakes and doesn't always get things right. But, they do learn and they do try to make improvements.

    Advice to Management

As a manager, I like to think I take a common sense approach to things. Finding the balance between "its a business" and "people" is not easy but I would like to think that we're getting better at this.
