I have been working at Ohlone College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Ohlone is one of the best community colleges around-- that's no doubt. It's a pretty good place to work in terms of people. Everyone I've worked for in the college, or with the college, has been great. The supervisors generally respect the students.

    Cons

Hours are often sporadic/displaced, meaning you'll only work 2 or 3 hours on one day. Not great for working in between classes.

    Advice to Management

Higher wages to prevent extremely high turn over.

I have been working at Ohlone College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Human Resources is very supportive and seem to care about all levels of the college. Most of the academic Dean's are extremely supportive and really care about the students and supporting the faculty.

    Cons

While the culture was very "family oriented" previously, currently departments seem to work in silos, which can lead to competition and disorganization. There seems to be a major disconnect from the President's Office to the rest of the college. I have noticed a major shift just in the last year where people have seemed to start giving up on new and innovative ideas because their progress always seems to get halted, and/or they are so overworked they can't take on anymore.

    Advice to Management

Better communication across all levels of the college. Additional management positions to lessen the burden on all of the managers (align to the structure that is found at many other colleges). Improved marketing. Better support and recognition of Dean's, Directors and other managers.

    Pros

Great colleagues can be found every department

    Cons

Low pay, admin is insensitive to adjuncts

    Advice to Management

Realize your adjunct pool teaches half the classes, so holds up a chunk of the school. And treat them with the respect they have earned

I have been working at Ohlone College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The staff is great. Some faculty are wonderful to interact with, but other faculty need to realize that holding a degree does not make them more valuable than those who do not have a degree.

    Cons

Some administrators are not personable and are aloof.

    Advice to Management

    Come down to earth.

    Pros

Stress-free working environment, great team, etc

    Cons

As a student aide, opportunity for advancement is low but no surprise there because the job applied for is just appropriate for students who will subsequently transfer to 4-year colleges.

    Advice to Management

    Good job, keep doing!

    Pros

The working environment is very friendly, co-worker are willing to help out each others. Also, they will randomly have potluck for lunch which every body will bring in some food and share.

    Cons

Sometimes people come in with a very rude attitude, but still you have to deal with it. But rather than that, I cannot think of anything else
