    Pros

The company tries hard to build a culture. There are a lot of creative projects to get your hands in.

    Cons

It can be tough to feel like a part of the community. It also feels like there are a lot of battling egos that can stand in the way of collaboration.

    I worked at Ovando

    Pros

One of the top design houses in NYC, constantly thriving and amazing new projects coming in one after another. Pushes you to think outside the box and the creative team is extremely talented. Also a lovely group of people to work with (with the exception of a few). Owner is a true perfectionist who really cares about her product and brand.

    Cons

There is a Lot of drama and company politics. Sometimes would feel like you were back in high school... Clicks, rumors, etc and It becomes very distracting. Ovando is striving for a corporate vibe but goes about it in all the wrong ways. The owner seems to view her employees as disposable. You're best is never going to be good enough so your time there is a constant battle to please her which is nearly impossible.... Also, doing the job you were hired to do probably won't be enough to succeed there and it's easy to get burnt out very quickly. The turnover is constant and it's easy to get blindsided. Makes for an unsettling work place. The floral/event industry is a niche business in the sense that it's challenging to find creative people that are also professional and polished. The company is a mix of truly talented people, but they're not all the most professional or easy to work with. Not to say that they're aren't some extremely wonderful people there that are great to collaborate with.

I have been working at Ovando full-time

    Pros

The people who work there and actually make the company's revenue are some of the most talented people in the industry. You can definitely get inspired even in conversation with the possibilities. There are good times and bad times as there are in all companies.

    Cons

Any talented person who works there will soon have their creativity will be stripped of them due to the "corporate" atmosphere, the term corporate is used loosely because there is an identity crisis between being a creative house and following very strict design rules that don't make sense and that very few people think are worth paying for. High turn-over rate, especially during slower times because the owner... panics. This means owner does not value their employees and has literally said that everyone is a "moving part". Owner likes people with bad attitudes because they feel it shows a sign of strength- so owner respects you more if you are rude to her. Has created a hostile environment. Owner likes to ask if you did your job, or did you NOT do your job and has created an workplace where people put blame on others instead of being accountable. Owner is rude and dismissive to employees and clients alike, and takes forever to make a simple decision. However, owner is very quick to make decisions that negatively affect everyone if in a mood.

    Advice to Management

Don't take advantage of your employee's skills or treat people badly. Take the time to properly train employees and avoid hiring people in the middle of a busy season. Follow procedures that have been set and stop making exceptions. It confuses new hires. Too many pointless meetings because people don't know how to communicate or read emails.

I have been working at Ovando full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Most of the people are lovely. The design work is unlike any other, which is always fun and a great learning experience for a designer. Because the design work is so unique the clients are typically the kind of people who appreciate pushing the envelope.

    Cons

Lack of communication and teamwork. Each department looks after itself and doesn't work in the interest of the company as a whole. The "that's not my job" mentality is prevalent here. The pay is pretty terrible and the only way to ever get more money is to take on more responsibility. Just doing an excellent job is not enough to get even a modest raise most of the time. Asking for a raise is a treacherous game... because along with money comes double the expectations and when you don't meet them your job seems to be on the line. The owner seems to be getting a little better but she can be extremely condescending, rude and dismissive.

    Advice to Management

In order to get people to start working together better you need to chill out on the idea that everyone needs to take "responsibility" for their mistakes. This concept has gone to such an extreme with people being punished for simple mistakes. When you do this you only create an environment where people are trying to escape blame and pointing the finger at different departments because the alternative is to suffer... monetary punishment or humiliation in front of their peers. This in turn creates an environment of animosity towards fellow workers and an unwillingness to go beyond their job description in any way. If you want people to take responsibility for their mistakes you need to create an environment where they can do that without fear of retaliation or humiliation. When problems arise, talk about them. Don't try to figure out who is ultimately to blame, that doesn't serve anyone. Positive reenforcement works better than negative reenforcement as a rule.
