I worked at Reliance Steel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great working environment.
Regular meetings to keep everyone in the loop.
No one is really out of reach (outside of the biggest heads of the company). You can easily call and/or send an e-mail to anyone in the company and expect a response
Great Benefits, expect for vision (for a company where we stare at a computer the majority of the time, vision should have higher priority)
    No pettiness among employees

    Cons

There was a turning point for this company in several different locations that took place from the beginning of 2015-2016. Some of the hardest working individuals started disappearing and/or had their positions changed. Several staff members were moved from salary to hourly. A lot of the new hires basically didnt seem like they knew what they were doing. It was like a well ran ship that went under some type of mutiny and the end result, it felt like that ship was sinking.

There are some departments that were unaffected by all the change, but there were others that were hit hard.
Ultimately, your future in the company is very unsure. 1 day you may be doing great, the next, you're being transferred to a new department, new building, or just being let go.
    Training is loosy goosy
Sometimes your concerns, even voiced many times, fall on deaf ears

    Advice to Management

Do not forget, unhappy employees will undoubtedly turn into unhappy customers, and ultimately lead to overall dissatisfaction.

    Pros

Very solid fortune 500 company. Job security is the best part of the company. They are well managed and have a very strong Corporate leadership group.

    Cons

they have grown to fast and are losing contact with the ground level employees. Employees are starting to feel like they don't matter. Promotion opportunities are limited.

    Advice to Management

Remember the ground level, division employees. Corporate and division level managers need to show less arrogance and more concern for those who are really earning the money.

I have been working at Reliance Steel full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Everyone treats each other like family and the benefits are pretty good. Room for advancement since this is a Fortune 300 company. Even though this is a traditional/conservative metals company, there is a fair amount of diversity in terms of gender, race, and sexual orientation. Many locations worldwide so it's great if you're in a position that lets you travel.

    Cons

Highly political environment, especially when you consider how so many people around you are connected to those higher up. Some of the things that bother employees is how conservative the company is with its finances - especially when it comes to travel and expenses. This goes a long way in bringing employee morale down a few notches.

    Advice to Management

Employee morale isn't the best and Reliance is a company that makes over $8 billion a year, it wouldn't hurt to give employees incentives so that the family-oriented work environment continues to motivate them to stay on and grow.
