I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Competitive salaries/benefits, excellent people, extremely professional environment. Good performance and improving, also very well suited for new nuclear build

    Cons

Some difficulty with change, due to long tenured employees/supervision. Exempt work-hour expectations are high. Lots of retirements in near future

I worked at STP Nuclear full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The employees are great to work with. You will be hard-pressed to find better coworkers at another company.

    Cons

It has a very regimented nuclear culture. If you have never worked in the nuclear industry before, they place a lot of importance on procedures, having organizational programs to try to improve things, and compliance with regulations that can seem draconian at times.

    Advice to Management

Push back against overly complex programs and be willing to kill some of the sacred cows that do not add value to the company, industry, or community.

Supportive employer. Working at STP is like working with family.

    Cons

No big cities near by. Not many activities in town.

    Advice to Management

    Get away from micro-management.

    Pros

Teamwork, mutual respect, focus on safety; the company backs its employees.

    Cons

It's eight miles west of Wadsworth Texas on FM 521.

    Advice to Management

    Parking, Parking, Parking.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The coworkers are great, and the culture is good. My favorite part is only working four days a week, and the excitement of working in an operating facility.

    Cons

It is located in the middle of nowhere. The closest city of any size is Bay City, and the closest city with over 20K people is Lake Jackson. A lot of people commute, but with working 10 hours a day, adding an extra couple of hours for commuting isn't ideal. Not a lot of things are computerized; most of the design work is paper-based.

    Pros

Good Nuclear Safety Culture and people overall work well together.

    Cons

Remote area for living...If you like hunting, fishing and small towns...its for you.

    Advice to Management

Continue to build on our culture...work on improving our PI&R skills...and add more resources to minimize the knowledge transfer issues WE have due to the aging workforce.

    Pros

The employees and the "WE" team spirit of cooperation. The opportunities for advancement as we build two more nuclear plants adjacent to the two we currently safely operate.

    Cons

Work location is far from suitable housing and amenities.

    Advice to Management

More Management By Walking Around (MBWA) and less management by email.

I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The structure of the engineering organization is improving.

    Cons

It is difficult to advance because the titles and levels are not well defined nor available. Very small town feel. The general perception is that you have to be good friends with or be related to someone to move up the ladder.

I have been working at STP Nuclear full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Cheap area, excellent pay, incompetent managers one can bully.

    Cons

Nothing to do in area, feckless "leadership", dissenting opinions are crushed.

    Advice to Management

Learn the differences between management, supervision, and leadership. STP has a dire shortage of leaders and is filled with useless managers and supervisors.

  10. "Not as good as it once was"

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Safe clean environment with great people. Love the professionalism and what we do. The culture and community outlook of the company is very positive.

    Cons

The company is starting to lag behind other surrounding industrial companies in benefits and pay. Total procedural driven maintenance and ops make it difficult for productivity.

    Advice to Management

Stay competitive to keep your talent
