I have been working at Seattle Public Library part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good pay when work was available; beautiful branches in great locations

    Cons

In my case, management were unresponsive and deliberately withheld performance reviews. Some frontline staff and management were rude and dismissive of temporary staff. HR was non-responsive regarding this issue.

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on serving people (patrons and employees) rather than upholding system

    Cons

there is very little room for job growth.oftentimes dealing with the general public can be challenging and you are exposed to ALL walks of life.

    Advice to Management

management has to deal with ever constricting economic pressures, however should realize that people feel they know best what the communities they serve needs most.

I worked at Seattle Public Library full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Great mission. Feel good about what you do.
-Great jobs for students and young people.
    -Good benefits.
    -Decent amount of time off.
    -Fair policies.
-Great people (for the most part)

    Cons

    -Soul-crushing
-People spend years looking for full-time work. When they finally get a full-time gig, they stay in that position until they retire or die.
-You need to give 45 days notice to take time off, even one day.
-Everyone is overqualified and applying for the same tiny pool of jobs. You'd better have a master's degree to be anything more than a shelver.
-Library management wants to be "innovative" but consistently fails. Their idea of innovation is changing the name from "Library" to "Libraries" and buying a 3D printer.
-Older employees hate any new service proposal that's not directly about books, and they have the loudest voices.
    -No vision for the future.
-No support for dealing with violent, drunk, or mentally ill patrons. Some workers have PTSD from being attacked by violent patrons.

    Advice to Management

-Install security guards at more branches.
-Recognize that work done at larger branches is much more strenuous than small neighborhood branches, and this difference should be reflected in pay.

The mission and intelligent, creative employees who are passionate about it and providing customer service to the public.

    Cons

Difficult to gain traction on initiatives because of fluctuating economy and funding and executive level turnover.-
