    Pros

It's a very collaborative and transparent environment. Best part is working on products that affect people's lives everywhere, very inspirational. Everyone is really smart and fun, some people are really intense though. There are no small, lame projects so everything feels like you're working on something that will have impact.

    Cons

People tend to get stressed out and worried about failure and focus on fixing the next problem, so maybe stop and smell the roses sometimes. Though, everyone is very dedicated and passionate.

    Advice to Management

Company is growing really fast and hiring lots of new people. Would be good to define the culture and values to help hire the right people and for new people to be part of growing the culture.

    Pros

Super collaborative, work hard- play hard, great perks and benefits! Work from home options, weekly company meetings, transparent, fun coworkers and a great product!

    Cons

As the company grows, more official processes are needed.

    Pros

    Smart people

Can't emphasize this enough. These are some of the most brilliant minds in Silicon Valley and can probably work anywhere but chose to work here.

It's a pretty run of the mill technology company that's moving from startup to mid-sized company having a lot of difficulty doing it. The people are great, but everything else is so-so. Perks are average. Really hope this company is around in the next 5 years since the concept of social singing is actually pretty good. Seems the recipe for success is here but execution will be key.

    Cons

Like many companies of this size, decisions are made by gut-calls. Sometimes, decisions are very good and sometimes they are very bad. Not everyone owns up to their decisions but we all have to deal with the consequences.

We finally have HR. This is a good thing. But the con is that for a long time we did not have HR and things were not very rosy.

A lot of people are leaving lately. Some people are finally fed up and opportunity cost of staying and grinding every day for IPO that may never happen is just not worth it. Probably should have stock buy back plan because people are antsy.

What is a Smule? People ask me where I work. I answer them and they shrug their shoulders.

    Advice to Management

There's a lot of advice to give but you won't read it or care. So let me summarize. Treat employees like people, not numbers on a spreadsheet.

    I worked at Smule full-time

    Pros

Great product, strong user community. Large number of true music lovers and gifted young people.
Nice WFH policy. Fun office, great food snake and benefit.

    Cons

Large number of senior level leaders were hired in the past year and brought heavy hierarchy and bureaucracy.

Dishonest new hired managers destroy trust with team members and result collapse of the entire team. Managers spent most of time manage up and show no respect to my work and opinion.
Heavy emphasis on years of work experience rather than real skills and knowledge in recruitment of middle level directors.

Difficult for smart and diligent junior members to move up. People disappear often and no transparency of true reason why people are hiring, leaving, firing.

No HR in charge of work complains and performance review.

    Advice to Management

Think about what’s the root cause of high turnover rate in the past few months.

"Great products and people, growing pains"

I have been working at Smule full-time

    Pros

Smule products are fun. The user community love it and are super positive. The employees tend to be friendly, super smart and dynamic. They engage in a lot of fun activities together. The company is very transparent in terms of the business. The company has generous benefits and a great location.

    Cons

Growth spurt has assembled a team that does not always mesh - old time employees stuck in startup mode mixed with new leaders that bring big company bureaucracy and spending, and too many junior employees spinning their wheels in senior roles - standard growing pains. The company is not so transparent in terms of internal planning (reorgs, hiring, firing) - at least not until after the fact. Too many people are stressed and worried about failing.

    Advice to Management

Hire people you really trust to do their jobs and let them run the course with their plans. Don't call things out as successes or failures too soon. Hire based on ability not just brand names of past employers.

I have been working at Smule part-time

    Pros

As in title, environment is wonderful. First thing you see when you walk in are a bunch of musical instruments (guitars, a drumset, grand piano, etc). Everyone is friendly, management easy to communicate with.

    Cons

Some disorganization, not everyone communicates super efficiently. Office feeling cramped, but expanding to another floor will solve that.

    Advice to Management

Clarity with the employees is important. The dashboards are a great touch, super helpful for everyone to be on the same page. Maybe for focus on internal communication between teams, but really there isnt much to complain about.

I have been working at Smule full-time

    Pros

Great team, humble, down to earth and getting things done.
A great vision and unique products/platform.
Crazy growth in the last couple of years, in both community and business/revenue.
    Beautiful product and design.
Tons of opportunities perfect for someone who want to learn and grow

    Cons

Some scaling pains in internal communication and focus, nothing special in any other startup

    Advice to Management

Train and coach every lead and manager, communication and leadership is hard and can't be naturally learnt.

I worked at Smule full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Fun and pretty unique products.
    - Work/life balance is pretty decent if you're on the right team.

    Cons

    - Leadership is poor across the board: no charisma, no empathy, and sometimes downright mean.
    - Salaries are below market rate.
    - Product plan is -- at best -- murky.
    - "Unlimited PTO" but if you try to take more than 10 days off, you're met with some resistance.
    - No opportunity for career growth.

    Advice to Management

    Do some leadership training.
