    Negative Outlook

I worked at Spectrolab (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are great during my tenure there.

    Cons

The business is dwindling so fast that this company was over 1000 employees back in the year 2000, but it is now approximately 250 in 2016. Management has made really bad decisions over the years, which is what is causing the demise of this great company. Mother Boeing is really trying to save this small subsidiary, but I wonder how long it will take before it decides it is not longer worth the losses... Company benefits have also been cut over the years.

    Advice to Management

Motivate people, focus on talent, don't use fear as management tactics

I worked at Spectrolab (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good compensation, nice people to work with in some areas. Interesting product.

    Cons

Almost no motivation and enthusiasm to to do job better and grow a career. Company is shaken by constant lay offs or fears of lay offs. Poor management. Number of people working on the floor dramatically reduced over the last few years.

    Pros

Wages and overall benefits are fair. You get to work with some very good people and the product lines are interesting.

    Cons

Real discussion is not welcome. Panic and fire-drills are a way of life.

Management's concern for employees is less than convincing. The company's association with the parent company is only exploited when it is convenient and it does not extend to employee benefits or work-life balancing. There is a constant erosion of employee benefits.

Having too many years at Spectrolab seems to be a criteria for layoffs.

    Advice to Management

Inability to level workload is not acceptable. It is not an artifact of the industry but a failure of middle management and a burden to the workforce. Concentrate on work-life balance for all associates and get rid of those who will not help to achieve it.

    Pros

Free tickets to aquarium of the pacific. Boeing employee discounts. Good working with some talented people. Good benefits package.

    Cons

Very cyclical business with lots of downturns and layoffs. Most of the people that built this business to be the leader in space PV are gone. Once the leader is now falling behind competitors.

    Advice to Management

Need to attain and retain employees with the skills and experience to build the business. Need better performing products to compete in the marketplace.
