I worked at Springwell full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The workload is mostly manageable if you are good at time management. Supervisors are responsive and want to ensure that you are not overwhelmed and will take the time to listen to you.

    Cons

Leadership in the organization is overly concerned with being the top agency and analytics vs. caring about the actual humans that work for the organization. It can feel like you are being micromanaged from your supervisor because 'big brother' is always wathcing and sending reports down to them about what you have done incorrectly in the month. The paperwork and perfection needed within the computer system can be exhausting on top of having a large caseload. It feels like you are being pulled in many different directions and both management and your clients need your full attention at all times. Leadership does not seem to have a handle on the amount of work it takes.

    Advice to Management

Take a caseload on yourself for several weeks of difficult cases to understand what your employees are going through. Try to understand their perspective better and put less emphasis on being the best and more emphasis on caring for your employees and consumer's.

I have been working at Springwell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great work-life balance, great staff and colleagues and very understanding management. Being in the non-profit world for a majority of my adult career, I have had a variety of levels of commitment from an agency to their values and employees. Springwell values its employees and when you have an idea they actually listen....I feel like I can actually make a difference

    Cons

A recruiter would really help the agency in filling any vacant positions.

    Advice to Management

    Keep up the hard work

I have been working at Springwell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Supportive staff across the organization. I learned a lot and am still learning a lot. Agency truly cares about clients, and about staff environment. Feels great to be able to help clients and know that my work makes a difference.

    Cons

Some positions are entry level so staff in those positions tend to want to move on. Agency often promotes from within but each year a good few leave - usually for more money. Those departments requiring more skills that pay more tend to keep staff longer.

    Advice to Management

Continue to increase starting salaries of entry level positions.

I worked at Springwell (More than 8 years)

    Pros

This agency was a nice place to work. It seemed like the consumers were first and foremost in the agency's mind. Slowly but surely that changed. Then decisions started being made that steered them away from what the core mission was. They were always striving to be " THE BEST" but in that effort they veered away from caring about the consumers and more about how to drive their staff to the brink.

The benefits of this job? Well if you have one of the "good" supervisors, you'll feel supported and won't be micromanaged. Most of your peers have good senses of humor and are good resources when you hit a tough case. If you aren't one of the lucky few? You'll enjoy incorrect answers and policy explanations.

    Cons

You will be given a workload that requires more time than what you are allotted. HR will tell you not to work over 37.5 hours, but your supervisor will penalize you if you aren't getting your work done on time. Revolving door of staff, to the point where you won't even bother to get to know people because they'll all be gone in 6 months. They use shady review practices. There is zero change for moving up, unless you are one of the select few brown nosers. Once you bring up an issue? Forget about getting a promotion or getting a good review- you will be marked in the eyes of management as a trouble maker. When you bring a difficult case for review, you will get suggestions and attitude that make it apparent people assume you're incompetent.

Honestly try to go work at Mystic Valley, Somerviille Cambridge or BayPath.

    Advice to Management

    Consider other career opportunities

Lots of changes: most positions now allow telecommuting, salaries have increased and lots of internal promotions.

    Pros

Serving a population in need-I still remember some of my clients to this day

    Cons

    -Low pay
    -No support from managers
-Huge caseload (90+ clients) and lots of turnover means you're told you have to take on their cases as well

    Advice to Management

Start showing some respect to your employees. Most of them are hard working and want to do a good job. You need to create a culture of appreciate and respect.
