    Pros

This is a great company to work for if you're looking for a career. It's a growing industry with lots of opportunity for those willing to work for it. You gain exposure to the organic industry and the different facets of business - market trends and fluctuations, inventory management, sales, purchasing, import regulations, quality, R&D, etc.

It's a fun, fast-paced, dynamic work environment, with an entrepreneurial spirit. The people here are great and you build camaraderie with co-workers. It's challenging work with an emphasis on learning and developing different skill sets. There's a small kitchen with coffee and organic snacks provided by the company.

    Cons

Keeping up with the pace of growth can be challenging. Priorities will get re-organized due to new projects or set backs. There are not enough employees to keep up with the pace of growth or the workload that accompanies it.

    Advice to Management

Better hiring practices and incentives for long term retention. Turnover has been an issue with this location for various reasons but there are dedicated employees who work hard to support the business.

    Pros

Exciting environment working with Organic foods and supplying Private Label packaged goods across the country. Company has shifting from copying to innovating which makes things more interesting.

    Cons

There is currently a bit of uncertainty given the new investors and what that will mean for employees. It's a good place to work, but uncertainty is probably the main con right now.

    Advice to Management

Focus more on letting people do their jobs instead of having them spend time creating more reports for management review.

    I worked at SunOpta full-time

    Pros

Exposure to many organic foods (commodities) and internal workings of one of the largest organic sourcing companies (60+ countries). They also helped me with relocation $.

    Cons

Very long waiting period to get hired. This applies to time between interviews and to the final offer letter, which took 4 months for me. Beware of management, they are the main reason why it is rare to find an employee who has been working longer than a year as commodities specialists as well as quality assurance technicians/specialists that have any background knowledge of food science or that come from the food industry; rather you'll have (stock) traders, no different than the ones you have in Wall Street, which for me was a shock as I have both academic and food logistics experience. Also, if joining the dry desk be prepared to either become submissive to the whims of supply chain managers and vice president or prepare for an early termination. There is no use in arguing as their logic is: you don't know anything and need to follow orders until we tell you when you're ready. Just this year they have lost 3 quality assurance technicians/specialists, been sued for sexual harassment (VP), and had numerous complaints and lawsuits with respect to the authenticity of their imported products. Nevertheless, the company has succeeded in developing a large portfolio of organic products in the last 30 years, mainly because of their personal at their headquarters in Amsterdam. However, in the USA it is very obvious how greedy and unsustainable they are. For example, they use the socio-ecological benefits of organic food, not because they care about the environment or the health of people but rather because it financially benefits them (they don't have any programs or incentives that help promote organic production or access to organic food for employees or local community) .

    Advice to Management

Retrain/replace yourselves or at least have SunOpta (parent company) to be more involved in the hiring of Tradin Organic employees and verify the matching of people's skill set with the position as well as develop a formal scheme for future employees to follow.

    Pros

Fast moving new product development, CEO and leadership team is accessible, leadership is willing to pay for talented people and bonuses can be worth putting in the extra effort

    Cons

Lack of management training/leadership, strategy changes based on quarterly earnings, operations/quality standards are inconsistent and differ drastically between products, bullying is the norm and creates toxic working environment, the company lacks a coherent identity/message

    Pros

Good company for someone that is starting out

    Cons

No flexibility in schedule and no raise makes it very difficult to be able to meet personal obligations

    Advice to Management

Management needs to be more appreciative for the hard work that the employees do. Not giving a raise is a bad choice to keep morale up

    Pros

Growing industry where you learn new things every day and work with a dynamic group of individuals and companies. Good opportunity for advancement with hard work and dedication. The organic industry is on a fast growth trajectory and this company has the history and products to keep growing. Opportunities for international travel.

    Cons

Fast paced environment where you need to catch on quickly since not enough people to keep up with growth now. Not for someone who just wants an easy gig. Turnover has been high so keeps employees maxed out.

    Advice to Management

Better training for new employees and a clear road for advancement.

    Pros

A few but nothing exciting to share.
Tradin is subpar to the rest of the divisions.
Dutch managers don't blend well with American culture.

    Cons

Toxic management from head to toe including HR team. They scratch each others backs but don't care about the company. I've never seen anything like it. It's a shame investors are barely aware of how bad management team is.

    Advice to Management

You make the company look so bad. Best thing is to sell the company.

    Pros

A great place to learn about the organic food industry. Structure isn't their strong suit, but if you thrive in an environment that allows you to develop your own path and gives you opportunity to grow, this is the place for you. It's hard work, but it's a great group of people doing it right along side of you. This is not the place for someone who just wants a job.

    Cons

Currently understaffed and finding the right "fit" is difficult. It's not your average laid back Santa Cruz place, therefore your average, laid back person will find it difficult to keep up. Communication is challenging and needs to be worked on.

    Advice to Management

Continue to develop better hiring practices and communication techniques. It's in the works and things are getting better.
