Pros

On the job training Team based. Always felt very supported by my teammates and service coordinator. A lot of autonomy. Great experiences- you learn a wide variety of case management skills that are marketable -Made many lifelong friends Working with the youth of Baltimore is very rewarding- no other experience quite like it.

Cons

Long hours (I forgot what free time felt like) Upper management often says that it wants input from fellows, but they really don't. If you are in anyway outspoken or do not fully agree with a policy or goal of the organization, you will have a hard time. Did not feel supported by upper management.

Pros

Great community, both staff and youth. Eye-opening and life changing work, great experience. Helped in building connections in Baltimore and learning about the nonprofit world. Got to really get firsthand experience in case management, and loved the youth and families that I worked with. It was also a place to see the micro and macro aspects of social work. I was a social work undergrad, and Choice really does all the best practices that I learned about in school before coming here.

Cons

There is no question that the schedule is insanely intense. You work well over forty hours and you cannot consider this a job. Instead, it is a fellowship and a real learning experience, but requires some serious dedication to the youth and the community!

Pros

While Choice Program provides a great opportunity to work with youth and families, they take advantage of young recent grads looking for a way to give back or enter the non-profit world. There are great experiences you will take away, but do not accept a position here unless you fully understand time exhausting time commitment with a less than minimum wage pay. - Great experience with youth and families in Baltimore City - Flying Fruitshake Stand provides wonderful opportunity for youth

Cons

- 50-60 hours per week - Although you get reimbursed for mileage, it doesn't come near covering the damage, depreciation, or general wear and tear that will accrue over your time. - The stipend is unrealistic to cover living expenses, fronting money for activities with kids, damage to car, data used on personal phones, and health expenses as provided coverage is limited and does not include dental or vision. - The company continues to do things they way they have been done instead of innovating to provide better services to youth and families that need them - Although it is said that safety is a priority, there are no measures taken to actually ensure that Fellows are safe while doing home visits - The culture within the program is negative as so many of the Fellows are unhappy with their position and requirements, but they do not want to leave the kids they form great relationships with.
