Hershey’s Chocolate is now featuring Beacon Health System as one of its ‘Heartwarming the World’ stories that depicts real people and real interactions with a piece of Hershey’s chocolate. Click here to watch the video on Hershey’s YouTube channel. Late last year, Hershey’s discovered the story of Sarah Samson, our long-time Memorial chaplain who boosted the morale of coworkers during the pandemic by handing out miniature Hershey’s bars. Social distancing prevented Sarah from giving hugs. But she found that by sharing chocolate, she could still personally connect with our teams when they needed comfort and kindness more than ever. Sarah went one step further, too. She taped a ‘dad joke’ to each Hershey’s bar. While masking made it difficult to see people smile, Sarah loved to hear associates laugh at the humorous one-liners. She continued sharing chocolate bars with associates across the hospital even after the worst of COVID was behind us. Hershey’s chose Sarah’s story from across the country as part of its mission to ‘Heartwarm the world.’ In late November, a video crew visited South Bend and shadowed Sarah as she interacted and connected with NICU and Pediatrics nurses, staff and patient families — with chocolate in hand — at Beacon Children’s Hospital.

Niles High School students who are part of the Career Technical Education, or CTE program, have the unique opportunity to learn about nursing and healthcare from our clinicians and caregivers right inside our Beacon Health System hospitals. “The benefit to the student is exposure and really digging in and seeing healthcare from first-point experience. There is a million nurse shortage in our nation and its going to continue for more than a decade. So this helps us great an interest in healthcare. We want to ignite excitement and passion around nursing and all the professions in healthcare,” said Sarah Paturalski, MBA/MSN, RN, Vice President of Nursing & Clinical Services, Memorial Hospital.
Summer camp. At Memorial Hospital. Sound interesting? High school students have the opportunity explore medicine and possible career paths in healthcare during the one-of-a-kind Mini Medical University at Memorial Hospital.
Beacon Health System and Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Center celebrated the opening of The Surgery Center of Granger on Thursday with a ribbon cutting that marked the completion of the regional destination for orthopedic surgery and care. The Surgery Center of Granger reflects the vision and expertise of these leading healthcare providers and demonstrates their commitment to providing the highest quality orthopedic care to patients at a convenient centralized location in the community. The Surgery Center of Granger is a $15.1 million, 23,150-square-foot facility located on 4.65 acres on the north side of Beacon Parkway near the Indiana Toll Road entrance and Capital Avenue. The building contains four operating rooms, one procedure room and 20 pre- and post-operative recovery bays, with the ability to add two more operating rooms, a procedure room and up to 10 patient bays in the future. “The combined strengths of the Beacon Bone & Joint and OSMC teams will mean comprehensive care for patients, whether they have an acute injury or have been living with chronic pain."
Kelsey Ratering sat down one evening and put pencil to paper. She started with a heart shape outline because “connect with heart” is part of the Beacon mission statement. Kelsey also knew she wanted every associate to feel connected to her design and the theme, “For a healthier you.” From there, her ideas started pouring onto paper. Fruits and vegetables. A basketball, jump rope, barbell and scale. A file folder for associates who work behind the scenes. Clinical items, including a stethoscope, X-ray, mask, thermometer and blood pressure cuff. A Sunburst Races bib. About three hours later, Kelsey had created a detailed design by hand, start to finish, for Beacon’s Hospital Week contest. But the Beacon Health & Fitness Three Rivers associate says she didn’t tell anyone she entered, because she never imagined she would be named a finalist. Kelsey also never imagined her design would be selected as the winner by Beacon associates. Her artwork can be found on hospital banners and on Hospital Week social media posts celebrating our amazing associates – associates like Kelsey.
