For Latinx Heritage Month, we honor the diverse cultures and rich history of our Latinx employees and communities! Why are we saying Latinx? Well, we actually had numerous internal discussions about the generational, geographic, socio-economic (and more) differences between folks who identify as Hispanic, Latino/Latina, Chicano/a, Latinx/Latine, and so much more. And we know one’s identity is so much more than just a word! However, part of how we build belonging at Discord is recognizing the beautiful differences in all of us. How Latinx folks choose to identify has a deep, intertwined relationship (spanning centuries) between the personal and political. Check out this blog post compiled by our wonderful Latinx Employee Resource Group, La Cafetería, as well as learn more about the illuminating 💡conversation we had with J Balvin to kick off the month!
Our friends at LinkedIn included us in this pretty cool list of top startups in the U.S. Humbled, grateful, excited — we're all the things. And we're just getting started! Come build belonging with us: https://discord.com/jobs
We just wrapped up Discord’s 2021 Hack Week, and the synergy was *impeccable.* We can’t share any projects just yet ;) but here’s the TL;DR: 1) We had 32 official cross-functional Hack Week teams working on unique projects. Which hacks will make it into our product? That’s top secret (for now) 2) Our friend (and Discord — The Movie star) Grimes made a special appearance, kicking off the week with tips & tricks to tap into our creativity 3) We used this opportunity to “Hack for Good!” With everything going on in the world, our Inclusion, Diversity and Purpose Team led its own Hack Week project, organizing a donation of $35,000 to organizations chosen by our team members, including: - International Rescue Committee (providing aid to Afghan refugees) - United Way of Southern Louisiana (helping with the aftermath of Hurricane Ida) - California Fire Foundation (providing assistance to communities impacted by wildfires in CA) If the FOMO is real — check out our job openings! Hack Week happens every year...see you next summer? #LifeatDiscord
Monotony? Don't know her! Every summer for a whole week, we take a step back from our day-to-day duties, link arms with team members we might not usually get to work with, and create something innovative together with Discord's HACK WEEK! Work in finance but want to dabble in code? Eager to contribute new features to our product? Discord folders, stickers and user profiles are all product features that have come out of previous Hack Weeks. Want to forget work and build a soft-serve robot? Boom, done. (No really, it's been done). The floor is yours, no matter your job description. We're currently hacking away this week, and no doubt our team members will resurface with some preeeetty cool creations. If this strikes a chord, check out our job openings! We’d love to have you and your ideas at our next Hack Week. #lifeatDiscord
Hate and racism have no place at Discord. That's why we're continuing to invest in the people, tools, and technology we need to be inclusive of all the communities we serve. Our work on this is never done.
"Discord is like a hug from the internet.” That’s just one of the many, unique ways our community members have described us. Trying to capture the essence of Discord is not easy, but we did our best in our new campaign video, Discord — The Movie (2021), with help from Danny Devito, Awkwafina, Grimes, J. Balvin, Bretman Rock, Marques Brownlee, Mr. Beast...and most importantly, our community members, who imagined all the stories in the film. See for yourself! Acknowledging the stress of 16+ months in a taxing pandemic and working at a high-growth company, we’re proud to give our Discord employees "Summer Break" — a paid week off to unplug and recharge. This is just a short-term remedy (and an important one at that), but we’re committed to building out additional resources to ensure that employees are able to bring their best, well-rested selves to work, including: -Piloting ‘No Meeting Thursdays’ as heads-down time to check things off the ol’ to-do list -Completing a company-wide meeting audit (no one likes unnecessary meetings) -Training and empowering our managers to help drive an awesome work experience for everyone, including evaluating and reprioritizing their teams’ workloads -Planning for Q3 at 80% capacity...and much more In the meantime, our summer break is much-deserved collective exhale for our team members.
The world is opening back up again, and many people are headed back to the office — but we’re remaining flexible. At Discord, our platform is our HQ, so we’re taking a location-agnostic approach to the Future of Work. We’re focused on creating an inclusive experience where each of us feels connected, has easy access to the information we need, and is provided opportunities to grow and develop — no matter where our desk lives. By prioritizing flexibility, autonomy, and collaboration, free from being tied down to a location, we are building an inclusive work“place” for all. At Discord, we imagine a world where no one has to feel like an outsider. That’s why we do our part during Pride Month: an annual celebration that brings fellowship, community, and power to millions across the globe. We are on a never-ending mission to build belonging, both internally and externally. This means creating an organization with a workforce that represents the diversity of our communities and the world as a whole. A core component of this is our employee resource groups (ERGs) who represent underrepresented voices and champion inclusion at Discord. Our Pride ERG leads workshops on allyship in the workplace, helps LGBTQIA+ partners team up with Discord, and has even made our benefits more inclusive. Sound interesting? Come build belonging with us.
Over here at Discord, we’re hard at work creating space for everyone to find belonging, so it’s awesome to see CNBC recognizing us as #3 on its 2021 Disruptor50 list! If an inclusive world where no one feels like an outsider is a reality you want to be a part of building, come join us: https://discord.com/brand-new/jobs
