We’re honored to be named Best Veterinary Practice and Best Emergency Pet Services in Willamette Week’s Best of Portland. These awards are a reflection of our incredible team, and of the trust our community places in us every day. Whether it’s a quiet snuggle in an exam room or a lifesaving procedure in the ER, we never forget what’s at the heart of our work: the bond between people and their pets. Every patient is family, and we’re proud to be part of their story.
When 5-month-old puppy Jaxon was rushed to DoveLewis after ingesting rat poison, his life hung in the balance. At that exact moment, Olivia, a DoveLewis therapy dog, was in the hospital for her routine blood donation. Her blood type was a match, and her donation saved Jaxon’s life. Thanks to our in-house Blood Bank, stories like this are possible. Having immediate access to life-saving blood products allows our team to act fast—because in an emergency, every second matters. Jaxon’s story captured national attention, including a feature on People.com, and it’s just one example of how our dedicated team and donor animals make the extraordinary happen every day.
Investing in the future of veterinary medicine starts with supporting the people behind it. At DoveLewis, we’re deeply committed to advancing veterinary care through continuous learning. That means creating opportunities for hands-on education and professional development for veterinary professionals at every career stage. Recently, we hosted a training focused on exotic animal medicine, combining expert-led lectures with practical, real-world lab experience for local veterinary teams. And with the addition of our new Community Room, we’re expanding our ability to offer in-person continuing education events—not just for veterinary professionals, but for the public as well. Because when we invest in learning, we elevate care—for every patient, every team, every time.
When expertise meets compassion, incredible things happen. Tuba, a 7-year-old Boxer, came to DoveLewis showing subtle signs something was wrong—a slight head tilt and loss of balance. Our 3T MRI revealed the heartbreaking cause: a brain tumor. But her story didn’t end there. With the combined skill of our two board-certified neurologists, Tuba underwent nearly five hours of complex brain surgery. Just 48 hours later, she was standing, tail wagging, and heading home with her family. Tuba’s recovery is ongoing, but her case is a powerful example of what’s possible when advanced medical care, teamwork, and deep compassion come together. Her story even made national headlines—underscoring the life-changing impact of veterinary specialists who never give up. At DoveLewis, we don’t just treat patients. We fight for moments like these.
“We want to be here in Portland, and we want people to feel comfortable coming down here because if your pet needs advanced medical care, this is the place to go....” We started in Portland, and we're proud to stay in Portland, providing pets with the comprehensive care they need, whenever they need it. Our new specialty facility, working in tandem with our 24/7 hospital, is here to serve your pets with the highest level of care, day or night.
DoveLewis is growing! Our new facility, right across the street from our current location, will more than double our space. With this expansion, we’re revolutionizing pet care by becoming a one-stop resource—offering comprehensive treatments, improving continuity of care, and enhancing the experience for families and their pets.
Our canine therapy teams just completed mock trial training focused on supporting victims in court. With guidance from the Multnomah County DA's Office, our therapy dogs and handlers have gained even more skills to provide comfort and calm during difficult court testimonies. Last year alone, our canine therapy teams volunteered over 4,000 hours providing support to victims of abuse, human trafficking, and more during their most challenging moments. The positive impact of our canine therapy teams continues to grow in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington County Courts, and it's heartwarming to see how they’re making a difference!

“We’re built to be open 24/7, so being closed for ER receiving even just a few hours overnight was difficult. It feels great to get back to our core community services,” DoveLewis President and CEO Ron Morgan says. DoveLewis says in addition to the 24/7 emergency room, a separate Urgent Care option is available to pet owners. Appointments are available as soon as 30 minutes from booking. “We’re nimbler than we were before, but we’re still treating patients with the level of care that the community expects of us,” added Morgan.
More DoveLewis departments have been AAHA accredited! DoveLewis has been re-certified as an AAHA-accredited hospital and specialty care facility. Our team worked extremely hard to pass in every area we submitted to be accredited which includes Emergency & Critical Care, Cardiology, Surgery, Radiology, Dermatology, Otology & Allergy, Neurology, and Internal Medicine.
