November is Native American Heritage Month! The Landmark bill honoring American’s native people correlates with the Native American Awareness Week legislation; which is the first historical week of recognition in the nation for native peoples authored by Cherokee/Osage Native American named Jerry C. Elliott-High Eagle in 1976. Native American Heritage Month, or as it is commonly referred to, American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, acknowledges the important contributions of Native people and celebrates their traditions and rich, diverse cultures. In addition, Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate and raise awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.
