Goodyear's Billy Taylor: 'Engaged, empowered people are your greatest asset'

Billy Taylor wrapped up a three-year stint running Goodyear's manufacturing plant in Lawton, Oklahoma, with more than a few reasons to be proud. Under his leadership, safety improved, processes streamlined, and projects racked up millions of dollars in savings.

  • Goodyear has released a non-pneumatic, or airless, turf tire for worry-free performance. We’ve been developing non-pneumatic technologies since the ‘70s, when we helped design tires for NASA’s Apollo lunar roving vehicle. Goodyear’s exclusive Duraweb™ Technology has been developed at the Goodyear Innovation Center in Akron, and is being manufactured in the U.S., exclusively for Bad Boy Mowers. The tire will be an option in early 2018 on the limited edition Outlaw XP. Goodyear’s Global Innovation team plans to continue developing non-pneumatic technologies for larger class vehicles.

  • Today we announced plans to create a new facility in Luxembourg that utilizes an innovative production process to meet the growing demand for premium tires. Our proprietary process uses flexible, highly automated modules, including 3D printing, to efficiently produce premium tires in small-batch quantities on-demand for replacement and original equipment customers. The technology used in the production process was developed and tested over the past five years at Goodyear’s innovation and development centers. The new facility, set to open in 2019, is in close proximity to Goodyear’s Luxembourg innovation center and a tire proving grounds.

Exclusive: Goodyear debuts 'Fitbit' for tires

CLOSE Goodyear is testing a smart-tire that, much like a Fitbit, relays condition information based on cloud computing analytics. The U.S. manufacturer has teamed with California-based car service Tesloop to gauge the efficiency of a tire embedded with a sensor that can monitor metrics such as pressure and temperature.

  • As we continue to innovate and create emerging technology, Goodyear has opened a location in the Silicon Valley to connect with automakers, suppliers and mobility-related startups working on the next generations of vehicles and service models. The focus areas for this office are to optimize tires and service solutions for autonomous vehicles and ride-sharing fleets, use tire and vehicle data to plan for tire replacement and service, and connect with leaders in the automotive industry to accelerate innovation platforms. • Our employees are harvesting some unique "seeds" of innovation as we introduce a new tire technology with support from the United Soybean Board. The first commercial use of a new soybean oil-based rubber compound is helping us enhance tire performance in dry, wet and winter conditions. A team of our scientists and engineers created a tread compound, or formulation, using soybean oil, which is naturally derived, cost-effective, carbon-neutral and renewable. By employing soybean oil in tires, we found a new way to help keep the rubber compound pliable in changing temperatures, a key performance achievement in maintaining and enhancing the vehicle's grip on the road surface.
