Conservation planning around the world faces numerous challenges, including too little (or too much) data, limited resources, and a wide range of stakeholders to include in decision-making. However, technological advancements are revolutionizing the way we approach these issues. One such advancement is the Marxan Planning Platform (MaPP), built with Mapbox by a coalition of The Nature Conservancy, Microsoft, and Vizzuality.
Tech Matters, a non-profit tech company, launched Terraso to address a deadly problem: The severe impact of climate change on local communities. There are very few tech and data resources for many communities most impacted by climate change. As a result, local leaders such as small governments, landowners, indigenous people, and investors are not equipped to make effective data-driven decisions at the ground-level. On top of this, concerns about data colonization are on the rise as outside researchers rush to collect and extract data, but fail to leave a lasting benefit for communities. Inspired by nonprofit Digital Democracy’s use of the Mapbox interactive storytelling solution, Tech Matters created a new open source tool from the same code: Terraso Story Maps. With an easy-to-use, no-code interface to create interactive maps, Terraso allows local community organizations to effectively communicate the story of their landscape, their plan for action, and its expected impact.

This year’s Pride Month theme at Mapbox was “Stronger Together.” The idea behind this theme is that it is not just on the LGBTQIA+ community to fight for equality on a global scale. This journey for equal rights and freedom to live as our authentic selves is the shared responsibility of our community and our allies around the world. We are stronger when we are working together. And with that, our focus was to host events (in person and virtual), share educational materials (books, podcasts, movies, and TV shows), and promote donation matching to LGBTQIA+ friendly organizations as a way to foster a sense of safety, learning, and community at Mapbox.

The beautiful Mapbox Core Style base maps are created by the industry’s best cartographic designers and save developers countless hours they would have spent building their own base maps. They can be used exactly as they have been built, or as a base layer that can be customized with location data and design elements. Core Style base maps are intentionally designed to meet the broadest range of customer use cases and can be styled on the client side, or developers can edit the style.json file themselves. Core Style base maps are available in Mapbox Studio, enabling maps that fit seamlessly with any brand to be created by providing full design control over icons and textures to delight users. We know it’s essential that developers, designers and organizations deliver a contemporary and engaging map experience to their end users, so we periodically redesign our Core Style base maps with modern trends to ensure that they look as cutting edge as they function. In 2022, some notable design trends included minimalism, simplified UX, vivid colors and immersive 3D. Read more in our blog.
