Which? is calling on telecoms firms to urgently cancel imminent broadband price hikes for their most financially vulnerable customers and allow all customers to leave without penalty if they face mid-contract price rises. Rocio Concha Galguera, director of Policy and Advocacy, said: 'With less than two weeks to go until April price increases take effect, it’s hugely concerning that some providers have not taken action to protect financially vulnerable consumers from these hard to justify above-inflation price hikes. Telecoms providers must urgently cancel the 2023 price hikes for financially vulnerable customers. They should work to proactively identify these customers and ensure they're not financially penalised, even if they don't take up a social tariff.' #CostOfLivingCrisis #SocialTariff

Writing for The i Paper, Rocio Concha Galguera argues in favour of more businesses accepting cash as a payment method, as its importance to consumers grows during the cost of living crisis. She writes: 'Enabling customers to pay this way isn’t just more inclusive - our research has continually shown that cash users tend to be on lower incomes - but it could also be beneficial for local small businesses and, more generally, the future of our high streets.' https://lnkd.in/eRY4KykP
Jenny Mclaughlin, our Neurodiversity Network chair, is a parent of an autistic child. Here she shares her top tips to support colleagues who are neurodivergent. If we all take a moment to stop, think and apply small changes, we can make a real difference to a neurodiverse colleague’s day. Here are some things to consider: Is this email clearly laid out? Are my instructions and expectations clear? Is this a realistic deadline for this colleague? Is this meeting format working for everyone?' Jenny says: ‘This week (and every week) I will be celebrating neurodiversity by rejoicing in my child’s brilliant, unique mind and reminding myself that with all of the challenges (and there are so many) come some amazing upsides.' #NeurodiversityCelebrationWeek (Jenny pictured with her dog Bumblebee)
What does flexible working look like at Which? We caught up with Katie Alpin, head of strategic insight, and premier account manager Emma Shaddick to hear how they adapt their working week to study and be with family. Katie comes into our London office two to three days a week, and works an extra hour Monday to Thursday in order to spend alternate Fridays studying for an executive MBA at Warwick University. ‘It’s hard work – it’s not really a day off! But I’m learning so much that I can bring straight back to my day job at Which?, and into my volunteering work as a trustee.’ Emma’s based in our Cardiff office working Monday to Wednesday. She reserves Thursday and Friday for her daughter, Connie, who is two and a half. She says: ‘I feel so lucky that I get the opportunity to do a job I love. It's really important for me to be able to still work and have a sense of purpose, while at the same time having the opportunity to spend lots of quality time with Connie – to be able to take her to forest school, to swimming lessons and to soak up all the little things – whilst saving money

Rebecca Bennett, front-end developer, tells us what embracing equity means to her on #InternationalWomensDay. ‘As a software developer, I am used to being the only, or one of few women in the room but it is nice to see that Which? are doing a lot to encourage diversity and make sure everyone is supported and included! I really enjoyed the ‘Women in product’ event that we hosted in January, where three women with very different pathways into their careers held talks themed on resilience. It was a great chance to speak with some inspirational people and hear their stories.' #IWD2023 #InternationalWomensDay
To mark #InternationalWomensDay here's another of our Science and Technology colleagues talking about what embracing equity means to them. Stephanie Kipling , science team manager said: ‘To me, equity means that everyone is treated fairly, included, recognised and celebrated. My background is in physics, which is typically seen as being a subject for boys - even to the point where, last year, a head teacher said that girls don’t take physics because of the hard maths. I was very lucky at my all-girls secondary school to have an amazing (female) physics teacher who encouraged all of us to enjoy the subject - yes, even the hard maths! And I did, so much so that after finishing my Physics PhD I did a teaching qualification, as I believe it is only by having visible female role models that more students will be encouraged to follow in their footsteps.' #IWD2023
To mark #InternationalWomensDay we caught up with some of our colleagues from our Science and Technology teams to hear what embracing equity means to them. Prish V. product lead said: ‘For me, International Women’s Day goes beyond just one day, it’s a genuine commitment to be part of a positive change for gender parity. It’s a reminder that constant action is needed to level the playing field, and to be the change we want to see. We are fortunate that generations of women have paved the way and fought to get us where we are today, but collectively, we must continue fighting for those who aren’t there yet. It’s about standing up for those women who are in positions where they cannot have their voices heard, and advocating for their rights.’ #IWD2023
