When I learned about ghSMART, it resonated instantly. What better way to combine my interest in business, my curiosity for people, and my desire to shape the world I live in?” Nick is passionate about social impact. From the start, Matthew McConnell was drawn to the people and leadership side of business, curating his talent as part of Deloitte’s Human Capital practice. While earning his MBA at Columbia, Matt also pursued his passions for service and the outdoors. He interned for the National Park Service, stationed in the Santa Monica Mountains, where he observed how mountain lions survive in an increasingly fragmented and urbanized landscape. When not crunching numbers and tracking mountain lions, Matt learned to rock climb on the Pacific Coast. A self-described food and wine lover, Matt enjoys living in fast-paced New York City where he and his husband take full advantage of all the city has to offer, including the ten restaurants on his block serving cuisine from seven different countries. Now that Matt has the freedom and flexibility to control his schedule, Matt plans to spend as much time as possible at their new Fire Island beach home. Learn more about Matt and ghSMART at the link.

In honor of this week's widely anticipated release, we thought we’d spotlight our own ‘Top Gun,’ ghSMART president and former U.S. Navy fighter pilot, Jeffrey McLean. Lieutenant Commander McLean piloted the F/A-18 Super Hornet for 51 combat missions over three deployments to Afghanistan, completing over 1,000 F-18 flight hours and achieving 250 aircraft carrier landings. What is it like landing a jet on the deck of the USS Eisenhower at 150 miles per hour after almost seven hours of flying? “Daytime, thrilling – the perfect amount of challenge. At night? Completely terrifying.” What has Jeff’s time as a combat pilot taught him about leadership? “When flying jets, everything happens quickly. The more adaptable a pilot is, the farther they can think ahead and react as things change, the better. Great leaders are like skilled pilots – they plan, prepare for contingencies, bring in the right team and execute. When things change, they adapt quickly and act decisively.” The ghSMART team is lucky to have former Lt. Cmdr. McLean as our fearless President!
