What is a Dermatologist?

Dermatologists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating conditions involving the skin. They also often treat medical issues involving the scalp, hair, and fingernails. They recommend treatment options for skin cancer, along with common skin conditions such as acne and eczema. They evaluate moles, birthmarks, rashes, and other features to detect any signs of illness or abnormal development. They perform routine screenings, and educate patients about risk factors and symptoms of skin cancer and other diseases.

Dermatologists must be board eligible or board certified in dermatology and have a valid license to practice medicine in their state. They must have in-depth knowledge of a wide range of dermatologic conditions and the latest treatment options. These roles require good communications skills and a dedication to supporting patient health and well-being.
