What is the hiring process like at Abbott?

      Abbott reviews

      Its okay

      Pros

Great benefits and their hiring process was great. Coworkers are awesome.

      Cons

Expectation is that you will live to work and give it your all. Alot of guilt taking time off work.

      Pros

You get a little over 115 hours of PTO each year

      Cons

Management will only promote candidates that they are friends with or a candidate that was originally brought on board by Abbott by a particular manager. The hiring managers will want the candidates that they hired originally to move up in the company quickly because it makes the manager look good. They promote within at Abbott but the candidates are not qualified for the position that they are interviewing for. The candidates will not have very much overall work experience but they will get promoted multiple times before an actual candidate who has 12 plus years of experience even gets 1 interview in that time frame. It’s all about politics at this company. They will promote people to be supervisors who have never been a supervisor before or even a team lead. Certain manager will tell you that they will put in a good word for you with the hiring manager for another role but those certain managers never actually put in a good word for you. I had a certain manager last year even though that manager sat 40 feet from where I sit, he didn’t speak a word to me for 8 straight months.

Good Opportunity, expected to work overtime

      Quality technician

      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Great company to work for in terms of benefits, and opportunities for growth. - If you're looking for obtaining experience in multiple different types of tests and/or lab quality departments, they encourage cross-training. - Generally good management, but they are worked pretty hard

      Cons

      - Very much dependent on the lab, but there is an unspoken encouragement to work weekends or overtime to complete testing - Can be difficult to transition out of the lab setting, but might just take longer. - Environment is highly corporate, as one would expect, but that results in a very bureaucratic system and political atmosphere. - Depends on lab, but they often avoid hiring new people and instead bring back people from other departments to do the same tests

      Pros

•Strong Brand Recognition: Working for a reputable global company like Abbott opens doors and adds weight to your CV. •Accelerated Learning Curve: Due to the high workload and wide range of responsibilities, you gain experience quickly and are exposed to various aspects of the business beyond your core role.

      Cons

•Excessive Bureaucracy: The process of getting business expenses approved is frustratingly complex, requiring an unnecessary number of approvals. •Shared Services Challenges: Dealing with centralized shared services, often based outside the country, can lead to delays, miscommunication, and inefficiencies. •Outdated Processes and Policies: Many internal procedures are old fashioned and not suited to the current pace of business, which adds to the daily stress and pressure.

      Pros

Wish I had something positive to say!

      Cons

During the interview process, the hiring manager failed to disclose critical job responsibilities, such as the fact that you would be programming patients' pacemakers without a medical professional present. This lack of transparency is concerning, especially considering the potential risks and ethical implications. Additionally, to maintain your position, you must pass multiple exams with a score of 90% or higher, adding immense pressure and stress. Depending on your team, you may get little to no support in the studying process. From personal experience, some members of my team gave me multiple wrong answers when I was studying and failed to put aside proper time to support me. The management and organization were extremely unprofessional in not providing this information upfront before asking candidates to relocate across the country and sign a relocation agreement with Abbott. This agreement requires repayment of over $10,000+ if you leave within two years, regardless of whether you are terminated or resign. Not to mention, the risk signing a 12-month apartment lease and those lease break fees. Furthermore, there was no mention of employment contingencies related to testing in any employment contract or intial job description, which comes across as deceptive. When I raised my concern about this, I was met with mistreatment, being sidelined and ostracized by the team. This experience reflects very poorly on Abbott's corporate culture and management practices. There are many other companies offering healthier work environments. I strongly advise others to consider their emotional and financial wellbeing before committing to a position at Abbott.

      Pros

Good benefits, stable job, interesting business problems to solve. Awesome healthcare tech products.

      Cons

This was the worst software engineering job I've ever had. The reason came down to basically the worst management I've ever worked with. I have no doubt that there are other teams at this company with other managers that are great. I probably would have given 4-5 stars if I had worked on those teams. My manager's words didn't back up his actions. A shockingly immature software engineering culture was fostered despite the fact that the product we were working on was a world-class healthcare product being used in dozens of countries by millions of people. My manager was manipulative and twisted my words to seemingly always put me in a negative light. I never got decent work to do despite there being tons of opportunity that matched my skills and experience. My skills and experience were majorly overlooked and underutilized. The final straw was that despite my manager saying to me personally that I was "brilliant" and technically skilled I was threatened with a performance improvement plan. I asked my manager "Why?". My manager gave no legitimate reason. After pressing him further over several meetings I came away with the major feedback item being that I needed to format my JIRA ticket titles in a different way (which I did over the coming weeks, but is this a good reason for PIP-ing somebody?). My manager was demoted and his replacement came in and again threatened me with a performance improvement plan. I asked "why?" and he literally said. "I don't know. I was told that this was happening so I'm continuing it. Let me get back to you on that". For these reasons I left Abbott and got a promotion and pay raise in the process.
