Pros
People Who Know, Know BDO
Cons
The company sounded promising during the interview process, but the reality was quite different. Training and business practices are outdated compared to other firms and the internal culture is poor. Turnover is extremely high. Senior management sometimes makes subtle discriminatory remarks, such as commenting on international employees’ accents. I would advise future candidates to do careful research before joining. It’s also worth noting that the rating for a specific employee group suddenly increased by a noticeable margin from 2.8 to 3.7 within a year. This raises questions about the authenticity of some reviews, so I encourage future candidates to look beyond the overall score and read through individual comments carefully.
Pros
I joined BDO RISE a year and a half ago, after navigating the often-tumultuous waters of multiple failed interviews. With 15 years of independent work behind me, I frequently encountered skepticism during the final rounds, largely due to my lack of traditional corporate experience and the misconception that age could be a barrier. However, my journey with BDO RISE was a breath of fresh air. From the very beginning, the interview process was nothing short of extraordinary. I received regular updates, which made me feel valued and engaged. Each of the five rounds unfolded like a rich tapestry of learning, where my strengths were not only recognized but celebrated. Constructive feedback on areas for improvement was offered with warmth and encouragement, creating an atmosphere of genuine support. In an organization that cherishes individual strengths—regardless of age—I have found not just a workplace, but a nurturing environment that fosters professional growth and cultivates deep loyalty. At BDO RISE, rewards and recognition are integral to our culture, celebrating hard work through various initiatives. The organization honors all faiths and festivals, fostering a sense of inclusivity. There’s a strong emphasis on sports and hobbies, encouraging everyone to pursue their passions. Team collaboration and open communication are foundational, enhancing our collective efforts. Additionally, promotion opportunities are available at all levels, and the non-restrictive work timings promote transparency and integrity, making it a truly supportive environment. The leadership at BDO RISE genuinely embodies an open-door policy, allowing me to approach any leader with my thoughts and concerns without hesitation. This open communication extends not only to my immediate supervisors but also to my stakeholders in the U.S., creating an atmosphere of trust and collaboration. It’s refreshing to work in an environment where my voice is valued and where dialogue is encouraged at all levels. The rise and growth of an organization cannot be measured solely by business success and output; it is equally reflected in the happiness of its people. A thriving workplace is characterized by engaged, fulfilled employees who take pride in their contributions. Their well-being and satisfaction are key indicators of the organization’s overall health and potential for long-term success. I am truly glad to be a part of such an organization, where the focus on people and their well-being creates a positive and inspiring work environment. It’s rewarding to be surrounded by a team that values collaboration, growth, and happiness.
Cons
I believe that every organization is a work in progress, and embracing this perspective encourages continuous improvement. By acknowledging our challenges, we can proactively seek solutions and enhance our processes. This mindset fosters a culture of collaboration and learning, allowing us to support each other in our growth journeys and collectively celebrate our achievements. I am glad that BDO RISE embraces this thought and open for suggestions and improvement.
Pros
There were a lot of smart people there and still are. Fun annual trips. Generous reimbursement policies. Opportunities to work on different projects. CFI was much better culture than BV in my opinion. Good accounting firm if you can avoid the layoffs.
Cons
The company has good intentions, but like any public accounting firm, you have to deal with billable hours and the culture depends on which region you work in. I found the SW region / Texas to be the most prickly. There were a lot of smart people there and still are. They lost a lot of people after 2 rounds of layoffs. I found that a lot of good things I did as far as managing certain projects and mentoring associates went unnoticed and unappreciated as it was sometimes difficult to showcase to directors. Also, each director had a different level of interactions wtih each set of projects. The review process was essentially a massive awkward gossip-fest. It should have been limited to the direct managers and probably the direct region with written feedback from others. Reviews often boiled down to favorites/ the equivalent of teachers pets. I didn't like the culture, but it is likely one of the better public accounting firms out there. Small bonus. Lower pay than other non-public accounting firms like Kroll or Lincoln. No women at all in the SW valuation team - not much color either.
Pros
I was well paid. The junior level staff is largely excellent. A week off between Christmas and New Years.
Cons
TLDR: Bad communication, bad management, no feedback, frequent layoffs. 1) Despite specifically asking about my on-boarding plan during the interview process and being assured there was one, there was not. My on-boarding plan was to read a 70 page legal document. I was never trained in a single task. 2) There is a culture of having lots of meetings, but decisions or action items are rarely determined in these meetings. I believe they are just to increase billing. I was told by junior staff they liked working with me because when I scheduled a meeting with them, they actually understood what the action items were, which was unique among people of my level or above. 3) I was lied to about receiving a bonus my first year. I was told to be eligible for a bonus in my first year, I had to join by a certain date in November. I set my start date specifically to meet this deadline, but I did not receive a bonus my first year. Had I known I would not have received a bonus, I would have taken more time off between jobs. When I raised this with my career advisor, he said he would try to resolve it, but he never followed up. 4) My career advisor was completely absent, often canceling check-ins at the last minute. 5) The circumstances of my departure were rude, cruel, and shady. My performance reviews had all been Successful, including my most recent mid-year review. Since that time, I had taken on numerous new responsibilities and a new project. I had developed what I thought to be was a good rapport with my project manager, and she was actively continuing to assign me new tasks and responsibilities. Then I was called out of the blue to inform me that I was being let go for performance reasons. I had never once received any negative feedback from my career advisor, and my project manager had indicated that I was largely succeeding in my role. I do not claim to be perfect, but I performed my work on time and accurately. I have no idea where this came from, and attempts to reach out to my project advisor to ask for clarification were ignored. I have since received out reach from many colleagues offering support, to indicate they believed I was treated unfairly, and that they would happily vouch for the quality of my work. 6) They had three layoffs in the 18 months I worked there. Not stabile.
Pros
Indiscriminate hiring, they will take everyone
Cons
They are willing to hire horrible people and HR has a terrible response. If you are looking for a safe workplace or a trustworthy team and work environment, don’t work here
