What is the salary like at Crunchyroll?

      Great Company, Lots of Change

      Pros

Pay and benefits are great. The people you work with are genuinely incredible (I walked by the president in my first week and he knew my name. Crazy!) Lot’s of opportunities to make an impact. It certainly isn’t boring! There’s always something big to do but usually you can collaborate with other creative people. If you like fast, this is your place.

      Cons

This is a con that could be a pro. Crunchyroll feels like a startup that is rapidly trying to grow up. Since the merger with Funimation, there’s been a ton of change as the business tries to get there and build scalable operations. The change is good, it needs to happen, but that might not be for everyone.

      Pros

Located on the Sony lot, fun coworkers, amazing perks, great benefits, competitive pay structure. It started off with a great work life balance which quickly changed due to understaffing and horrible project management. Started as a place where everyone loved what they did and changed seemingly overnight. A lot of changes within my team and instead of handling them with care, I felt we were all on a sinking ship that only got worse.

      Cons

Leaders who don’t care, disorganized processes that are outdated, favoritism, money being a motivator over work culture, making some people work more than others (uneven work division), and cutting some amazing benefits due to budget.

      A Disappointing Company

      Pros

      * Coworkers are talented, collaborative, friendly people who are also anime fans. * The office environment is cool with plenty of anime decor. But many of the meeting rooms are more aesthetic than functional with furniture that looks better for staging photos than actual use. * The company doesn't offer equity. The base pay and benefits are average for industry standards.

      Cons

      * Toxic leadership runs this company. From the C-suite down to middle managers, a culture of fear where blame and pointing fingers are the default reaction when things go wrong. Leadership must be right at all costs even when they're wrong. * If you're seeking professional development and growth, this is not the place for you. You're discouraged from questioning and innovative thinking in favor of only doing what you're told. Questions are seen as a challenge and as I mentioned earlier, leadership is always right. * Success at this company is tied to adopting a "yes-man" mindset. Don't ask questions, keep your head down, and do your work. This is not a safe space to be creative or express yourself authentically. If you know of a better way to do something, you actually don't because leadership is always right. Pay attention to reviews about this company. Anime is an appealing product to sell and many employees are genuinely passionate about the product. But the tradeoff is in the form of leadership decisions that trickle down to the individual employees. These decisions are probably going to be poor but leadership is always right. I can go on, but I will just say that this was the most disappointing career move I've made so far.

high growth company, doesnt mean high growth for all roles but it's doing well comparatively speaking to other companies. fairly chill work environment. perks are decent

      Cons

low pay which is below industry average. this leads to lower quality teammates and can be frustrating to work with. culture is highly dependent on team.

      Pros

      - Peers I worked with were passionate about the intersection between tech and anime, and we built amazing things during my time there. - Startup culture where you can get a lot done if you're good with barebones AWS and can navigate the politics. - Decent pay

      Cons

Leadership is either intentionally or unintentionally killing the culture. - They create top-down initiatives that "sound good" but in reality are low-impact at best or downright harmful to the anime community at worst. - Lack of career development. Felt like they cared more about deliverables than my personal development. Especially over the past 9 months, and it's getting worse.

Cartoon hell - where engineers go to be ignored and have meetings

      Pros

Salaries are generally high Hybrid options Lunch provided in some locations

      Cons

There is a serious lack of experienced leadership in the entire organization. Those at the VP level are particularly difficult to work with as they often decide upon policy, process, and even technology choices without any input from the team. Everything is dictated, and critical feedback is actively belittled and dismissed. In my entire time with the organization, I have had zero conversations about training, advancement, career-growth, etc.... zero. One-on-one meetings with leadership are always focused on status reports and whatever dictated instructions are being rifled downward. Engineering work is incredibly micro-managed while simultaneously lacking direction. Several "managers" get involved in the steering of engineering projects, with no alignment to real business value or outcomes. The result is numerous status meetings about the same topics with slightly different audiences, reducing time to actually organize and produce output. When things go wrong, and projects fall behind, the solution is often to "get more people". This results in the onboarding of inexperienced and under-qualified contractors to augment an already exhausted workforce. If you are considering an engineering role here because it pays well, be prepared to do very little work, participate in numerous redundant meetings, and do a great deal of wasted research. My advice to that end is to play things dumb and take on only minimal tasks... as that is all you will have time to do around the nonsense.
