      Director of School Operations Interview

      Jan 17, 2018
      Anonymous employee
      Brooklyn, NY
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Achievement First (Brooklyn, NY) in Nov 2017

      Interview

My interview process was very streamlined. I applied through an online job-board called "Hired" through my graduate school, and a recruitment staff member reached out immediately to set up an informational interview. Once we determined that I was a competitive candidate for the position, I was scheduled an interview with the regional director a few days later. This meet-and-greet interview went well, and the Regional Director indicated that she would pass me onto the next stage of the interview process (an in-person, final interview) at the end of the interview. I appreciated the transparency; there was no "smoke and mirrors" that seemed to be present in the other organizations I was interviewing with. In preparation for the final interview I was asked to submit a "work artifact," which was basically a work sample that would demonstrate my knowledge, skills, and abilities that I would be leveraging in the role I was seeking. The final interview was an in-person, all-day intensive that was held at the school-site that would be my placement. Since the final interview required me to travel from out of town, the recruitment team offered to put me up in a hotel the night before, which was convenient and comfortable. Starting bright and early (7:00 am), I met with members from their Network’s Talent Team, who briefed me for the day. Both talent representatives made me feel comfortable throughout a full day of interviewing, which included three group interviews. These interviews were conducted by members of the school leadership team, network operations executives, and their teaching staff. I also completed an independent work task and a facilities assessment with the Regional Director of Operations. Finally, I reported my findings from the facilities assessment in the form of a presentation to demonstrate my communication skills. I was one of three candidates that was interviewing that day, and the Talent team made it clear we weren't competing, and could all be placed in different schools if they assessed that we were the right fit. The provided lunch from a local restaurant, which was fabulous. I completed my interview at about 4pm. I thought the interview went well, but I did not secure the position I originally interviewed for, as an internal candidate was determined to be a better fit for the school’s needs. Although this was disappointing news, the recruiter and Vice President of Operations immediately reached out to me and indicated that they felt I was a great fit position in another school in their network, and encouraged me to attend another final interview day. At that point I was very impressed at how much care they were taking to make sure they found me a role in the network, so I proceeded with the second final interview. Again, the recruitment team made sure I had comfortable accommodations the night before my interview, free of charge. As it turns out, they were correct; I secured the role at the second school I interviewed with. All and all, it was a great interview process, and my interactions with the recruitment team really sealed the deal for me – they were honest, timely, and transparent with their communication throughout – which made me feel valued, and ultimately led me to call Achievement First my home!
