The interview process at Automattic was thorough and well-communicated, but in my experience it became unexpectedly exhaustive. The trial phase extended for over a month, and with revisions, feedback cycles, and multiple rounds of exploration, the overall process lasted close to two months. I invested more than 70 hours into the project and was progressing through what seemed like successful rounds, so being cut off abruptly before completing the full scope was surprising. While the team was polite and supportive throughout, the length and intensity of the process felt disproportionate to the clarity of the outcome. I appreciate the opportunity and the feedback they provided, but future candidates should be aware of the time commitment and the open-ended nature of the trial expectations.
