I applied through a staffing agency. I interviewed at Din Tai Fung
Interview
Applied online for the server position, exchanged over 4 emails with the hiring coordinator, changed plans in order to make the interview fit in my stress-heavy and busy employment searching schedule (as they and we all know it is). All to be greeted by a complaining hostess saying there’s so many interviews, and being told by the manager “before continuing the interview” that you start as a busser for 3 months then become a runner THEN a server.
My questions are: why even post an ad for a server if you only promote internally?
Why neglect my past 5 years in higher management and not mention anything within the first email exchanged?
I should be put on the payroll just for the time it’s wasted me to get there.
Catastrophic.

Question 1
“It seemed to scare the other guy off so just wanted to mention before going forward in the interview that you would start as a busser, then after 3 months be promoted to food runner then become a server in time. Is that ok? “
was easy, didn't have to do to much. You have to be competent, though, the job is very labor-intensive and requires a lot of multitasking. They are the biggest restaurant in NYC after all.
I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Din Tai Fung (Vancouver, BC) in Mar 2025
Interview
The interview was located in a building in downtown. Everyone was given a time slot, so I did not have to wait long until it is my turn. The interview itself was quick and straightforward. It was really efficient. Interviewer was also really friendly.
you have to make a video audition which is awkward. also you MUST be clean-shaven to be considered. with a razor, not a trimmer. they laughed at me when i said i have never used a razor but will learn how
