      Logistics Interview

      Dec 3, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Flexport in Nov 2015

      Interview

Had a very pleasant interview with the recruiter. Bubbly personality, professional, fast mover. Unfortunately had the complete opposite experience in the second tele-interview with someone who worked in the department to which I was applying. To start, this person -- we'll call this person Jane Doe -- was standoffish from the very beginning of the interview all the way through. It seemed to me that Jane was either particularly frustrated from the stresses of the job that day, hated the job in general and was burned out, or just has a jaded and off-putting personality. I tried to stay pleasant even through the core of the interview which mostly entailed me guessing at the details of working in this obscure industry. It occurred to me that Flexport may be running this gambit to stress test job candidates for what is sure to be a strenuous job, but based on what I've read from past interview reviews on this company, I think I just had a bad luck draw from one of those aforementioned burned out employees that probably shouldn't be interviewing people. Even so, I was sure that I didn't want to work at Flexport anymore just half way into the interview (that sinking feeling mid interview when you realize you've made a mistake spending time pursuing a dead end), but did my best to be cordial (probably not as well as I would have liked)) and continued to play ball. My performance definitely suffered after mentally checking out. Fortunately for me (/sarcasm), the interview concluded with a bit of an upper middle class sob story from the interviewer. This may have been the only genuine interaction in this regrettably excruciating half hour although it could not have come off more privileged and naive had Jane tried. The feeling was mutual and I did not receive an offer. I've had good interviews and bad interviews but this is the first that I've ever regretted. Flexport seems like a great startup, they're working on a big problem, and hopefully won't have trouble attracting good candidates as we'd all benefit immensely from their success. Just relaying my experience.
