      User Interface Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Fuel Medical (Portland, OR) in Oct 2016

      Interview

I sent my resume and cover letter, receiving an answer shortly afterward to set up a phone screening. Christi from HR was very easy to talk to, asked pointed questions, and answered my questions honestly and openly. I was called in for a casual first interview with Jeff, the head of design, and Jenny, a senior designer. After researching the company, I decided to wear a button down dress shirt, dark jeans, and a new pair of Vans. Clean and put together but not over dressed. My interviewers were dressed similarly. They asked some standard questions from a pre-printed form but I got the impression they were more concerned with my process. Both were, much like Christi, very easy to talk to. Not knowing exactly how this position fit into the process, they were honest and open about possibilities and expectations. No real pressure. I left satisfied and intrigued, wanting to know more. I was called in about a week later for another interview, this time with Aaron, the head of application development. There was a large meeting taking place during my scheduled time so I was a bit confused as to how to proceed but I was kindly greeted at the front by Christi and led to my interview. Aaron had prepared questions as well but, again, seemed more concerned with thought process and project management overall. Easy to talk to, no pressure. We ended our conversation discussing the internal application he developed, which I was very curious about. I left feeling a bit more confident in the position and wanting/hoping to get the chance to learn more. Later that week, I was contacted again by Christi and asked for references. At this time, I provided a letter of recommendation that I had received from my past employer as well. According to my references, they were all contacted and spoken to at length. They had nothing but praise for their conversations and the pleasant nature of the caller. I was offered the job later that week and started the following Monday. Overall, this process took a few weeks and was one of the best interview processes I've experienced. I am thoroughly impressed by the care and attention given to finding the right person for the job. This is a quality company.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Both interviews wanted to know about process. Both were more focused on UX (which kind of threw me since this was listed as a UI position). Both mentioned my portfolio (they actually looked at it!). Do I wireframe, do I use Sketch, how do I handle multiple priorities, etc. Pretty standard, relevant questions.
