I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at GitLab in Mar 2018
Interview
The process followed the steps outlined in the handbook. I started with three questions to answer. Next was a video call with a recruiter, then the head of product, then an engineering manager.
Interviews were easy to schedule via their online system. Everyone I talked to was friendly and approachable. I felt at ease and welcomed during the interviews.
I was honestly shocked to receive a rejection after three successful interviews. I got the impression that everything was going well, and I was a great fit for the role. During the interview process, I was actually contacted by a different recruiter at GitLab asking me to apply for the role I was interviewing for. I did request feedback regarding why they were not moving forward with my application, and I am awaiting a response.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at GitLab in May 2024
Interview
After being referred by an employee, I landed a screening interview where I was asked about my background, motivations and even had some behavioural questions in the middle.
The overall experience was bad mainly because the interviewer didn't turn on the camera and I couldn't form any type of Empathy. As a 1st interview I believe it's super important to create some kind of relationship with the interviewer so that the interviewed can adapt the pitch. The feedback given was always the same after each question and it demonstrated lack of interest since the beginning from the interviewer.
If this interviewer is the "cover" of the company, I'd seriously consider applying somewhere else.

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at GitLab in Nov 2023
Interview
I was rather late to the process for this position so they informed me at the beginning of my interview that chances were slim. It was nice that the recruiter was super transparent throughout the interview about the process but also things like salary. The interview questions were rather hard and they were clearly looking for specific types of answers and skills. The employee handbook section around interview questions that they sent beforehand was really helpful in preparing.
