Great Work Place
May 18, 2023 - Business Development RepresentativeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Remote work life with an inclusive culture at the same time.
Cons
Very few cons from working at GitLab.

Pros
Flexibility, All-Remote, Colleagues, Competitive Pay, Values
Cons
At times it feels as if there is too much process and procedures in some departments/orgs, and not enough structure in others. It feels difficult to strike a balance between a handbook page for every single possible scenario and almost no process/support/staffing for some functions which have been deprioritized. Culture and values have gradually declined in favor of short-term goals as the company tightens its belt and focuses on shareholder (R)esults.

Apr 30, 2023 - Strategic Sales Leader in Houston, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Company has an amazing culture, they were the pioneers to remote work and also great health benefits and 401k match
Cons
few leaders really destroying the company people with zero DevOps experience are being hired as sales leaders Gitlab needs to hire better leaders! I left Money on the table because I wanted to leave my manager, not the company! Gitlab is amazing

Amazing All Remote Company to work for
May 18, 2023 - Sr. Executive Business Administrator in Huntsville, ALRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
All remote company - schedule flexibility Great management Hard work recognized and promoted Job progression Pay and Benefits are awesom
Cons
Only one negative which would be working in an all remote company sometimes can be tough getting to build relationships with you co-workers compared to an in office position.

My favorite place to work, despite a sad resignation
Jan 27, 2022 - Senior Support Engineer in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Amazing teammates who genuinely enjoy being part of the company’s success. Nice people disguises as executives who lead by example. One of my favorite memories was the CEO sharing a selfie of himself playing a video game in the middle of the work day because things had gotten too heavy with the pandemic, and he wanted us to feel comfortable taking a break
Cons
Things can get lost in translation, so don’t be afraid to ask “stupid” questions if you’re not sure about something.

Transformational pre IPO; Steady decline post public offering
Apr 6, 2023 - MarketingRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Autonomous remote workplace. Asynchronous elements add even more autonomy. Nobody cares about the green light on Slack or how much time you spend working as long as you get the job done. Amazing culture among regular non leadership staffers. Values-driven, although much less now since becoming a public company. Live virtually anywhere you want.
Cons
Corporate culture takeover since going public. Significant concerns about decisions from senior leadership. Hiring standards have been reduced. Lots of lip service on virtually any topic outside of revenue generation. Still much better than many older and larger companies. Burnout is real, many folks have had to take time away from work or choose to leave due to the overwhelming amount of work. Having not seen the negative changes over time from going public, your mileage may be better.

Good work-life balance but Engineering Organization mostly fails to drive essentials changes
Apr 24, 2023 - Site Reliability Engineer in Austin, TXRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Good work-life balance - "Unlimited" PTO is nice in theory (but really just an accounting gimmick to avoid payouts of accrued vacation time on employee exits) - Management seems to genuinely care about the well-being of individual contributors - CEO genuinely seems to genuinely care about the well-being of employees
Cons
- Very challenging collaborative environment - Most work is OKR-based and yet alignment justification is very weak (top-down objectives seem poorly interpreted through the common "telephone game" signal degradation) - Very limited opportunities for grassroots contributions - Failure to embrace systems automation

May 21, 2023 - Data Analytics in San Francisco, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros

Cons
The company struggles with cross functional business operations. Very difficult to ship cross functional projects.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts about working at GitLab. It’s great to hear that you’ve had a positive experience. Though collaboration is the first value listed in our CREDIT value framework, we understand that effective collaboration across every team in a fully-remote organization can be challenging. If you have ideas that would help us collaborate more effectively, please bring those up with your manager or Department leaders.

Pros
Work/life balance and good benefits.
Cons
I am very disturbed by the steep decline in culture and values in the past year. The company continually pushes minority leaders out the door, nearly all women product leaders have been pushed out in the past 18 months alone. In the meanwhile, while it takes a woman on the product team 6+ months to be able to justify a case for promotion to director, the white men on the product team get multiple promotions within a couple months. They keep finding excuses to “layoff“ women product leaders, or women leaders suddenly “resign”. One of the white male senior directors brags about how he’s so good at getting people to accept departure packages so he doesn’t have to actually fire them, and interestingly enough, all the people he convinces are women and often women of color. I’m truly disturbed by bro culture of the product team.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a transparent review. Please know that we take issues such as gender bias and discrimination very seriously and have escalated this feedback to Product & People leadership. Please also know that there is a process for handling involuntary termination involving our People and Legal team to ensure these matters are handled appropriately. That process is outlined here: https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/people-group/offboarding/#termination Our People Group and E-Group leaders are committed to supporting underrepresented groups at GitLab and, if you feel comfortable, a member of our People Business Partner or Team Member Relations team would be available to discuss this feedback. You can also anonymously submit this feedback as outlined on this Handbook page: https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/people-group/#how-to-report-violations

Pros
This company is like a breath of fresh air compared to any other company I've worked for before. The flexibility and transparency that the company strives for meets and exceeds all expectations I had as an employee. I was able to take more time off in my first two months here than I had in the last two years and that was without using any PTO - just company mandated days off. I always know my goals and have a clear view of what I'm working on which allows me to grow within my role in very big ways. I highly recommend this company to anyone and my excitement shows when I get the chance to speak with candidates.
Cons
If you're not used to the async communication style on a global scale - it can really throw you off. A lot of the things you do are self guided and driven only by you, which is wonderful if you're ok with minimal oversight, but if you're the type of person who needs the face to face daily interaction than this company may not be for you.
