      Technical Program Manager Interview

      Aug 26, 2014
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at HBO (Seattle, WA) in Jul 2014

      Interview

Pre-interview homework assignment on requirements gathering for a fictitious product. Once approved via phone screen, you get a half-day interview with the entire team. You should have a very good background on requirements gathering and breaking down a product to it's core features. Think broadly and don't try to implement on the whiteboard.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

First hour was general questions from the team. Then they broke into a 5 person panel to build a product from scratch. Very specific, need to focus on the basics of requirements gathering and understanding the needs of the stakeholders.

      Interview

Straight forward, A couple phone screens, writing sample, then in person workshopping and a few 1:1 interviews. The requirements for the writing sample were a bit confusing - left too much up to interpretation if they are looking for something specific.

      Technical Program Manager Interview

      Nov 1, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at HBO (Seattle, WA) in Jul 2017

      Interview

The interview process was long and involved. There were at least 2 phone screens with recruiters, which was followed by an interview with a more senior member of the team. After that, a writing sample was requested which was followed by a long session with one of the senior members to discuss the writing sample. This was followed by an all day onsite interview, which was heavily focused on a long case interview. Overall the interview process moved VERY slowly with no commitment on timelines and expectations. The onsite interview was overall one of the most condescending experiences I have been a part of. They expect a certain level of understanding of certain concepts pertinent to HBO and ding you heavily for not being able to question those concepts in an interview/case setting. All of which is fine, but the focal point becomes your short comings for 3-4 hours of a case interview rather than what skills you can bring to the table. The requirement should be at that point to only bring in only people with experience in the technologies and industries desired, rather than trying to bring in talent experienced in different setting. HBO is NOT a tech company and the interview process reflects that.
