Monzo Bank Software Engineer interview questions

The interview process began with an initial HR screening, followed by a one-hour technical conversation with engineers. The discussion was focused on past projects rather than algorithmic questions, with an emphasis on understanding technical decisions, trade-offs, and ownership. The interview felt conversational and collaborative, with interviewers asking detailed follow-up questions to explore system design, scalability, and real-world engineering challenges. There was a strong focus on backend systems, reliability, and how candidates approach problem-solving in production environments.

Recruiter screening call followed by a technical interview with a senior engineer. The second stage was going to be a conversation about the past project, unfortunately turned into a grilling. Did not enjoy the vibe of that call but it helped me to realise their on the lookout for individual contributors, not team players.
