Bad gauging process!
I was greatly disappointed by the phone screen interview process. The interviewer seemed to be a junior and have no exposure to understand the purpose of a phone screen or a problem solving interview.
Few issues I found:
1. The point of a problem solving interview is to understand the thought process of the candidate rather than reaching a final solution with nitty gritty details. The interviewer hinted me to think silently for a few mins and give the solution. This perplexed me! The entire purpose of the interview was defied here as he gets no insight in to my thought process. He was showing more interest in nitty gritty details of the code than the bigger picture of approach to solve the problem.
2. Interviewer is supposed to look at the candidate's solution and understand it, even if it is any different from the answer he has prepared.
He kept confusing me asking for a few things missing in the code . I was confused totally thrice . I corrected him twice and by the third time he had got me confused. The solution I gave was completely valid which I realised only after the call is over and I could think clearly once again with out some one confusing me constantly. I looked up the internet and found another solution and realised the root cause for his questions and confusion. He was hooked on to the approach he had and those suggestions by him were invalid in my approach. The point to remember is there is not always one right solution to the problem. Interviewer should have the ability to frame questions on the fly or think over a new solution presented.
It would be great if company/ team reviews its interview process. Sending junior candidates who are not given proper guidance on what is the purpose of the interview can be waste of time for both the parties.
