I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopee (Singapore) in Sep 2020
Interview
I was referred by a colleague there. The interview process is very clear and fast to me. The first one is just common questions from recruiter, nothing special here. Then the next few days I received a link to a live coding session (my screen will be monitored) which are 2 coding questions in 70 mins. I aced all the test cases and after that I was informed that I will be advanced to next rounds, which includes a face-to-face live coding with an interviewer, another one with technical questions and the final will be about cultural.
The interviewers are really friendly and nice. They are very knowledgeable as well
The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopee in Oct 2019
Interview
4 rounds in total. first is HR phone call, asking about your backgrounds, reasons of moving, expectation for job and compensation. second round are DS in the team who also may be your future peer or lead. Has a coding test and asked about past projects. Third round is by a DS manager, focused a lot on my past experiences. I prepared for some ML knowledge points but didn’t ask any. Final round is done by head of DS. Mostly general questions about my expectations and plans.
1. interviewers are friendly. they are ok doing the interview in Chinese if you prefer.
2. interview doesn’t have very strict structure. Partly because they wanted to customize the questions based on my experience. But also not very professional.
3. based on the interactions, I felt the team isn’t very advanced in technology. maybe they are good at machine learning as a individual (I don’t know), but I didn’t see a strong infrastructure or clear strategy, or a deep understanding of the businesses problem they are trying to solve.
4. HR is totally incapable to decide value of candidate. They look at very shallow indicators like YOE or current pay level. But they miss how much contribution they can get out of me, especially when they really need some help in building a more advanced technology.
