      Engineering Manager Interview

      Nov 29, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at TestGorilla in Nov 2024

      Interview

there's a series of tests in their platform. a group of logic questions, then a debugging test, then 2 sets of management questions, finally one set of culture questions. the culture questions apparently have no right/wrong answers. but all the other questions do. i don't think it's fair to expect people to give one answer out of 4 on management questions when they don't have the chance to ask clarifying questions or motivate their answer. In many scenarios there are 2 possibly correct answers and you have to guess what they want to hear. on top of that, the time to answer the questions is really tight, presumably to prevent people from looking around, but it makes it really hard to truly understand where they're coming from with each question, particularly in the logic set. where you have to read very carefully. the debugging task is fairly complex. even with several years of experience in js, i couldn't do it in the 30 minutes, but despite progress made, it seemed to still score it 0%. on top of that i find very disrespectful of the company to ask someone to do 90 minutes of test without even speaking. i may not be a good fit for the company as well as they may not be a good fit for me. It's unfair to ask me to invest 90 minutes of my time without knowing first if i'm actually interested in the job.

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback about your TG hiring experience. We're sorry it wasn't a more positive one. As a skills-based hiring company, we strongly believe in evaluating skills first, experience second. To assess this, we select a mix of carefully designed tests that align with job requirements. This approach promotes fairness by reducing biases from traditional hiring methods like resume reviews or interviews. It allows candidates to demonstrate their skills before experience is considered, ensuring an objective and inclusive hiring process. We also often include a culture test, to assess a match between your preferred ways of working, and ours. You could find out more about the science behind skills-based hiring and our assessment creation processes here: https://www.testgorilla.com/blog/science/. Our Talent Acquisition team, along with the hiring manager, shortlist the candidates based on the assessments and evaluate the assessments in their entirety, including multiple-choice questions, custom questions, and video responses. From there, we move to a series of interviews, with different stakeholders from across our business - so there is plenty of human interaction, just not at the first stages, in line with our skills-based hiring approach. We’re always looking to improve our assessment, so we’ll share the feedback with our product team - including the concerns about the debugging score. We wish you the best of luck in finding your next dream job.

      Interview

We had a call from hr after which they sent a test. The conversation wasn't very long, and I was asked to take the test as soon as possible. Spoiler alert: if you see the test assignment, forget about that company.

Hi, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re sorry to hear that your experience with our hiring process didn’t meet your expectations. At TestGorilla, we use assessments early in the process to create a fair and unbiased evaluation for all candidates, focusing on skills over background. We understand this approach might not be for everyone, but it’s a key part of how we hire. That said, we’re always looking for ways to better communicate what candidates can expect, and your input helps us do that. We wish you all the best in your job search,
