One of the worst interviews of my life. Ever. To be fair I think it was mostly due to the matter of really bad personal interaction between people. I think someone else who "rubs off" better on the interviewer will have better experience. But here goes: There were 2 interviewers. I am not sure what was the purpose of the 2nd guy. He basically didn't do anything except stare at me the whole time. It felt creepy and stressful. The other guy kept shooting questions non stop, in a very "Commanding" , authoritative and somewhat (in my opinion) arrogant tone of voice. So much so, It felt like he was addressing an underling. It felt like coding under fire. And it led to me being aggravated which is probably the main reason for the bad experience. I do not normally encounter such manner in interviews. I also got the feeling he didn't really care about my answers as he just made various sounds in response to my answers. Sounds which could have expressed either consent or disagreement (think "hmmm" and "mmm") I'm not even sure he understood my answers completely or even cared about them. I wouldn't know because he didn't share information on whether or not he agreed with me. Except maybe once... One solution was correct but he kept saying it's wrong, expecting me to know what's wrong with it. At some point I got tired of the guessing game and asked directly what exactly he thought was wrong with the solution. I realized he was simply wrong and only when I demonstrated on the console that the solution is correct he relented and moved on. I did try being nice and said that, maybe, we just have different definitions for that specific implementation and not that he was wrong. On hindsight I think It may have made matters worse because it could have made him even more upset, as though I said he didn't get the definitions part right. There was terrible chemistry and a lot of stress. so much so that I refused to answer few questions as I felt like he was just setting me up for more "Commands" and guessing games, which I did not feel like playing, knowing that it meant throwing away the interview. Then again, I would not want to work under someone like that. At some point he regressed to asking me questions one might ask a complete beginner without any experience at all, as if to see I have a grasp of the basics. Questions like: - What is the difference between let, const, var? - What is an arrow function? how is it different from normal functions? I thought that was strange considering the position was for a senior role. At the time I thought I must have made a very poor impression or he was indirectly insulting me by implying I have a very poor skillset. But either way, why continue the interview at all? The low skill level of these questions forced me to answer as if explaining the matter to someone with no experience at all (i.e to a child). I do not think they liked that either. But then, why ask in the first place? I was so stressed out by the overall situation I made silly mistakes which under normal conditions I would not do or have a linter to avoid and fix. The technical level itself was reasonable but the stress impaired my ability. I suspect that coding under stress was a hidden purpose of the interview. Especially when considering the other interviewer who just stared at me the whole time. The interview was for a front end position but still, I was asked backend and Devops related questions for knowledge domains not found in the job description. Things like scaling up databases for millions of users at the same time. Since it felt like a setup I replied that I do not know and that I am probably not the best person to ask and to answer such a question. After the questions phase was over he went on a long monologue explaining how the company works and how much of a favor they are doing their developer employees by still paying them even if temporarily there is no external client to outsource to. All this time I was thinking why is this monologue necessary when obviously there is not going to be a follow up after this terrible interview ? I believe it has to do with Israeli culture itself. It's hardly the first time I have seen this behavior in Israeli interviewers. I encountered plenty of Israeli interviewers who delayed on giving an answer when they already knew there is no point in proceeding. I was always perplexed by this behavior. Personally, I always preferred brutal honesty to sugar coated dishonesty. I had a much different experience from European and American interviewers, they are usually much more open and direct regarding the interview process and the applicant's performance. I was so glad when we ran out of time I did not spend time asking vacuous questions and left as soon as possible. On hindsight I should have ended the interview much sooner instead of wasting my time.
