      Python Developer Interview

      Aug 23, 2018
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Charlbury, England
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Torchbox (Charlbury, England) in Feb 2016

      Interview

I used their online application form in December 2015. After not hearing anything for week, I was emailed saying that it was unlikely I'd hear anything until the new year. In mid January I chased repeatedly and eventually was invited to an "informal chat" by the CTO at the end of January. This went well, and afterwards I was invited to a formal interview at their main office in Oxfordshire 2 weeks later. This interview was fairly standard, but also involved some whiteboarding demonstrating knowledge of data structure design. This isn't a fair test whilst under pressure. Immediately after the interview was emailed stating "disappointment" that I'd not had experience with their flagship product (which wasn't part of the job spec) and if I'd be willing to fix a big in it (it's open source) or evaluate it myself and give a review. After doing this within a couple of days, I still had to wait another 2 and a half weeks to get a response. Although they offered me a job, I'd already started with another employer due to assuming I'd not been accepted and just not been informed.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Torchbox in Feb 2022

      Interview

For some context, I applied for the role as a career change out of engineering (although I did have some experience with Python). The first interview was a relatively informal chat, which went really well. The second was a technical interview, which I was apprehensive about - however both interviewers had an informal and supportive approach, prompting me to reach the right answers myself where possible. Feedback after this interview seemed to be really quite positive, but then there was the coding task... Essentially it was to extend an existing Django project with bugfixes and additional features. Having only experienced Django very briefly, it took me over 2 weeks of evenings and weekends to finish. My impression over that time was that this was very much an intermediate level project. Unfotunately due to me only getting it to ~90% completion, I was emailed to say my application would not go any further. However, Torchbox were excellent in following that up with a video call to discuss feedback, which was hugely appreciated. In summary, the interview process was still a positive experience, but there was a huge spike in difficulty for the coding task when compared to the technical interview.
