      Application

I interviewed at Travel Counsellors (Manchester, England)

      Interview

Super concerning recruitment process. They have done things the same way for 20 years and are proud of it, refusing to modernise and adapt to the current world. Their hiring process select for a very particular personality type, which is ideally a straight white neurotypical alpha male. I don’t think they have much diversity at all with that process and I don’t recommend it for anyone who doesn’t fit in that particular box. They use a personality test with no basis in scientific explanation, that no psychologist nowadays would approve of, on an ancient, terrible website. This consists of selecting words that describe you from a long list, some of these words include “attractive/good-looking” and other things that have nothing to do with the role itself. This should have been enough of a red flag, but regretfully I have accepted an interview with them. It started with them interrogating me about my private life within 5 minutes of meeting them and later rejected me for not being a “culture fit”, because I didn’t want to respond to their potentially discriminatory questions on sexual orientation, marital status and children. Then they have finally moved on to some technical questions which were ok/average difficulty. I didn’t get an offer, but I wouldn’t have accepted one anyway - good luck with your old school boys “culture”. I don’t want to work for an employer who hasn’t heard of the Equality Act 2010.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and share your thoughts on your interview experience here at Travel Counsellors. We are sorry to hear your concerns around our recruitment policies. Here at Travel Counsellors, we are continually striving to ensure that our processes create the best candidate experience and your thoughts are much appreciated. Company culture plays a significant part in the continued success of Travel Counsellors and the AVA Assessment used as part of the recruitment process helps us to understand individual preferences more, to enable us to gain greater understanding of prospective colleagues and assist in our actions to integrate new colleagues into our community. The assessment itself is not used to determine whether someone is successful or not – more to determine natural behavioural tendencies – and is used throughout the employee lifecycle. This form of behavioural assessment is also used amongst other companies in different guises. We have worked on our recruitment processes and made a number of changes to them over the past 12-18 months to ensure that they are compliant, robust and – above all – fair for those who are interested in opportunities within the organisation. We are committed to ensuring that the Travel Counsellors community continues to be a diverse, welcoming and inclusive community for all, having implemented a number of initiatives such as balanced interview shortlists into our processes. We are continually developing our approach to DE&I as part of our commitment to this inclusive and caring community. We would very much welcome the opportunity to discuss your experience in greater detail. Please do reach out to us people@travelcounsellors.com to set up a conversation. Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Travel Counsellors (Manchester, England) in May 2018

      Interview

Extremely relaxed, laid back and welcoming, made me want the job more. Split into two parts, first wanted to know about who I was as a person and what values I had rather than the standard boring interview questions that don't tell you anything about a person. Then the second part, I was given practical development problems to solve in the interview in front of senior developers and the head of development.

Who inspires you, what's on your bucket list, where do you want to visit in the world.
