I applied online. The process took 12 months. I interviewed at US Department of Homeland Security (Las Cruces, NM) in Jan 2012
Interview
There are several steps to the process but the closest thing to an interview was what is called an oral hiring board. I can't give you the specifics because we have to sign nondisclosure agreements. What the do is you are place in front of a three man board and they ask you questions about patrolling, your personal back ground and experience. Then the kind of lay out scenarios that you will likely encounter in the field. From the scenarios they judge your reactions to see if you are able to think on you feet and make decisions quickly. From this they try to judge whether or not you have the decision making skills to perform the work required.

There is a panel of three sitting in front of you asking only about four questions. They are writing notes as you answer your questions.
