      Consultant Interview

      Mar 2, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Des Moines, IA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Wellmark (Des Moines, IA)

      Interview

Took about a month after applying before they contacted me. First it was a phone screen with HR. The recruiter was very professional and I felt we had a good conversation. I was invited to come in for a panel interview 2-3 weeks later. First I met with the same HR recruiter (though this time in person) and she proceeded to ask me all of the same questions again. She was comparing my answers from 3 weeks prior with my answers on that day...which was odd, but I'm sure they have a strategy for doing that. She asked me twice why I wanted to work there, pressing the 2nd time, "I know I already asked you this, but can you again tell me why you want to work here?" (I mean -- should I NOT want to work there?? I gave her the same, detailed response!) Then 3 co-workers came in to interview me. The supervisor of the position I was interviewing for was supposed to be there but they were ill, so I never got to meet them (which I felt was unfair). The interview was about an hour and they asked some good questions. Guess what? They asked me why I wanted to work there! I got to answer that question 3 times that day! I could tell 1 person didn't like me but the other 2 did...I'm guessing it all came down to personality because I was overqualified for the job to be honest.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Wellmark (Des Moines, IA)

      Interview

The interview process and logistics at Wellmark was well communicated thanks to the good work of their talent acquisition staff. I would characterized the actual interview process with the hiring manager as inefficient and impersonal in my specific case for a couple of reasons which I will explain in greater detail. The interview process was inefficient due to the way my two in-person interviews were organized. The first in-person interview was one hour long and with the hiring manager only. At the conclusion of this interview the hiring manager asked if I would be open to meeting with one or more of their direct reports to interview further. I stated yes, and so at the next in-person interview it was both the hiring manager again and one of their direct reports. At the second in-person interview I was asked many of the same questions as compared to the first interview. I understand this was for the benefit of the hiring manager's direct report, but why couldn't they have attended the first in-person interview and we could have stretched the interview time to accommodate, or split up interviewers into groups? This would have sped up the process and avoided multiple trips to their office for interviewing where I recounted much of the same information. To touch on why the process was impersonal - after my phone screening and two in-person interviews the notice I received that they would be pursuing other candidates was sent as a simple and impersonal form email. I expect more after getting this far along in the hiring process. A simple thank you email from the hiring manager would have gone a long way. This kind of anonymous email is not what I would have expected and ensures I won't consider the organization in my future career search.
