      C++ Developer Interview

      Oct 31, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

      I applied online. I interviewed at think-cell in Oct 2024

      Interview

      Frustrating is the only way I can describe it. The assigned task was quite interesting and I think it could be decent as an initial evaluation of C++ skill. However, in practice, it was incredibly annoying. There are a few ambiguities in the requirements, and some edge cases that aren't specified. At some point I found myself trying to guess what the person who wrote the task was thinking, which is not a hallmark of a good test. I've been going over my code, and I'm certain I've implemented it right for what I thought was the correct behaviour. Given the same task description multiple people could write code that behaves differently and still conform to the specification, which is again not a good thing for an automated test. What's more frustrating is that this could simply be solved by providing a few test cases and their correct results. This won't compromise the integrity of the task, what it will do is clarify some important details that are left unclear in the description. I'm not saying the task is unsolvable, I think I solved the most difficult part (O(logN) for one operation, O(1) for the rest). I'm saying that skill can only take you so far when you end up having to gamble on what the task creator was thinking, only for you to guess wrong and get a "sorry you wasted 6 hours, but you got 'correctness' wrong, bye!".

      Dear candidate, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. The ambiguous nature of the task is designed to evaluate specific skills, especially attention to detail and problem-solving skills required for the position. One may come across similar situations while working on individual projects at think-cell and this assessment aims to evaluate that ability. However, we continuously review our guidelines to make sure they are understood correctly. We thank you for the time you have invested in completing the assessment. Wishing you the absolute best in all your future endeavours. Kind regards, think-cell recruitment team

      Interview

      After spending hours to do a test - they reject the application without even bothering providing feedback (and that despite the fact the test was well done and passing all the tests) - that is not a professional behavior and lacks respect for the time people invest in the process.

      Interview

      First it was a coffee chat and then a 10h technical assesment, without any feedback for their side. It was frustrating because after investing a lot of time, they don't even tell you nothing.

      Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the process felt frustrating. We aim to create a recruitment experience that is both fair and respectful of candidates’ time. Our technical test is designed to assess problem-solving skills in a realistic way and help us identify the strong technical abilities required to maintain the high standards of think-cell’s products. The platform allows up to 10 hours to complete the task to give candidates flexibility, for example to take breaks if needed. In practice, many candidates complete and submit their solutions within around 2–4 hours. Regarding feedback, we also understand that not receiving detailed comments on a submission can feel disappointing. Unfortunately, providing specific feedback on the assessment would compromise the integrity of our evaluation process and our ability to continue using this test consistently with all candidates. We appreciate your understanding on this matter. Best regards, People Team
