A publicist is responsible for ensuring that their client or company is always portrayed positively in the public eye. Duties include managing day to day relations with media as well as the social media accounts of the company. Additionally, publicists are also responsible for scheduling events, speaking engagements, interviews and public appearances with the relevant personnel. In some instances, publicists are responsible for creating buzz for new products to increase sales and demand.
A bachelor's degree in public relations, journalism, communications, business or English is typically required to become a publicist. For higher-level positions, employers may require a master's degree in public relations or journalism. Proven experience as a publicist in the industry is also preferred. An excellent publicist is a great people's person with exceptional interpersonal skills required to develop strong and successful relations with external personnel. The ability to multitask and manage time efficiently are greatly valued skills in the profession. Due to the nature of the job, publicists may be required to sit, stand and move around for long periods of time and the flexibility to travel to locations is necessary.
