About the Role
The Director of Safety & Risk Management is responsible for developing and leading the organization's enterprise-wide safety, regulatory compliance, risk management, insurance, and loss prevention programs across corporate and franchise operations. This executive leader serves as the subject matter expert for transportation safety, occupational safety, regulatory compliance, insurance administration, claims management, and enterprise risk mitigation.

Working closely with Franchise Owners, Operations, Human Resources, Legal, Insurance Partners, and Executive Leadership, the Director helps protect employees, customers, company assets, and brand reputation. This role is responsible for fostering a proactive culture of safety and accountability while reducing workplace injuries, vehicle incidents, insurance claims, regulatory exposure, and operational risk throughout the organization.

Safety Leadership & Strategy
- Develop and execute a comprehensive safety and risk management strategy across corporate and franchise operations.
- Establish company-wide safety standards, policies, procedures, and best practices that promote operational excellence and reduce risk.
- Create and maintain safety scorecards, KPIs, dashboards, and executive reporting.
- Lead initiatives that reduce workplace injuries, vehicle accidents, cargo claims, and insurance losses.
- Promote a culture of accountability, leadership, and safety ownership at every level of the organization.
- Provide Executive Leadership with regular updates on safety performance, emerging risks, and recommended corrective actions.
Regulatory Compliance
Serve as the organization's primary authority on regulatory compliance, including:
- Department of Transportation (DOT)
- Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
- Workers' Compensation regulations
- Commercial fleet safety standards
- Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs
- Driver Qualification Files (DQFs)
- Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs)
- Hours of Service (HOS)
- Vehicle inspection and maintenance programs
- State transportation regulations
- Unified Carrier Registration (UCR)
- International Registration Plan (IRP)
- International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)
Additional responsibilities include:
- Monitoring regulatory changes and ensuring organization-wide compliance.
- Leading internal compliance audits and operational reviews.
- Serving as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and inspectors.
Risk Management & Insurance
- Oversee insurance programs and enterprise risk management initiatives.
- Partner with insurance brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators to minimize organizational risk.
- Analyze workers' compensation, auto liability, general liability, and cargo claims.
- Identify trends and implement proactive loss prevention strategies.
- Lead investigations into significant incidents and catastrophic losses.
- Develop corrective action plans that reduce claim frequency and severity.
- Support Legal and Executive Leadership with litigation prevention and claims mitigation.
- Participate in insurance renewals, underwriting reviews, and policy evaluations.
Fleet Safety & Transportation Operations
- Establish fleet safety standards for transportation operations.
- Manage telematics, driver monitoring systems, and vehicle safety technologies.
- Develop driver coaching, accident review, and corrective action programs.
- Monitor driver eligibility, Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs), and qualification standards.
- Implement initiatives that reduce preventable vehicle accidents and improve fleet performance.
Workplace Safety
- Lead enterprise-wide OSHA compliance efforts.
- Develop and maintain workplace safety programs.
- Conduct field audits and operational safety inspections.
- Ensure timely completion of corrective actions and continuous safety improvements.
Franchise Support & Training
- Design and deliver safety certification programs for franchise owners and operational leaders.
- Develop engaging training materials, webinars, workshops, and annual safety conferences.
- Support franchise locations through compliance assessments and corrective action planning.
- Partner with Learning & Development to integrate safety leadership into operational training.
- Serve as a trusted advisor on safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
Incident Management & Claims Oversight
- Oversee investigations involving significant injuries, accidents, and property damage.
- Ensure accurate documentation, reporting, and follow-up.
- Manage workers' compensation and vehicle accident review processes.
- Coordinate return-to-work initiatives and injury prevention programs.
- Track and report claims metrics, trends, and performance.
Leadership & Team Development
- Build and lead a high-performing Safety & Risk Management function.
- Mentor operational leaders and franchise owners on safety best practices.
- Promote leadership development, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Drive initiatives that support organizational growth, operational excellence, and risk reduction.
QualificationsRequired Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Risk Management, Transportation, Business Administration, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in safety, risk management, transportation compliance, insurance, fleet operations, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing teams, programs, or multi-location operations.
Strong working knowledge of:
- DOT regulations
- FMCSA compliance
- OSHA standards
- Workers' Compensation programs
- Commercial fleet safety
- Auto liability and claims management
- Commercial insurance programs
- Transportation and logistics operations
- Accident investigation and root cause analysis
- Safety management systems
Experience supporting multi-location, franchise, transportation, logistics, moving, field service, or home service organizations is highly preferred.
Demonstrated success reducing accident frequency, workplace injuries, insurance claims, and operational risk.

- OSHA 30 Certification
- DOT Compliance Certification
- Experience managing captive insurance programs.
- Experience implementing telematics and driver monitoring technologies.
- Experience within moving, transportation, logistics, waste removal, home services, or franchise organizations.
- Experience leveraging AI-powered business applications and predictive analytics platforms to improve safety performance, regulatory compliance, risk assessments, incident investigations, claims management, reporting, policy development, training, and operational decision-making. Proficiency with platforms such as ChatGPT, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Claude, Google Gemini, Power BI, Samsara, Motive, VelocityEHS, Cority, Origami Risk, or comparable AI-enabled solutions is preferred.

Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience using safety management and incident reporting platforms.
- Working knowledge of telematics platforms such as Samsara, Motive, Geotab, or comparable systems.
- Experience utilizing reporting dashboards, analytics tools, and performance metrics.
Work Environment & Travel
- Ability to travel up to 40% domestically to support corporate and franchise locations.
- Ability to conduct field audits and inspections in operational environments.
- Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Pay: $97,756.93 - $120,000.00 per year
