Description Ivy isn't always green -- particularly when it's Brown. Founded as the College of Rhode Island in 1764 and renamed Brown University for benefactor Nicholas Brown in 1804, this Ivy League school is one of the oldest universities in the US. About 8,700 undergraduate, graduate, and medical students have nearly 100 programs of study at their disposal, taught by more than 680 faculty members. The school has a student-teacher ratio of about 12:1. Ruth Simmons was sworn in as president of the university in 2001, the first African-American to hold such a position at an Ivy League school. Brown awards about 90 medical degrees each year from the Warren Alpert Medical School. It has an endowment of about $2 billion.
