Today, 40% of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are sourced directly from nature, largely from plants. However, cultivating crops for medicines is time- and labor-intensive and is vulnerable to climate and geopolitical crises, among other challenges. With such a heavy reliance on agriculture, these APIs ¬– and the many common and essential medicines they’re used to produce – have an incredibly fragile supply chain that is unpredictable, inefficient, and expensive. The instable and disjointed nature of the current pharmaceutical supply chain has led to worldwide drug shortages and severe healthcare issues, recently experienced by many at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Antheia is solving for this using synthetic biology to surpass the limits of conventional drug manufacturing and discovery. By reconstructing complex molecules in yeast, Antheia can produce APIs without the use of medicinal plants, transforming the pharmaceutical supply chain. What has typically taken years and happens almost exclusively outside of the U.S., Antheia can do in weeks, at a lower cost, and domestically.
Antheia’s platform can be used to produce a number of different APIs and its pipeline is closely aligned with the U.S. FDA Essential Medicine List and Priority Areas listed by ASPR.
Antheia’s novel approach to biomanufacturing represents a viable path forward for optimizing the pharmaceutical supply chain and ensuring reliable, consistent, and widespread availability to essential medicines.
