Description Girl Power abounds at Smith. The nation's largest liberal arts college for women, Smith College provides 1,000 courses in some 50 academic areas including the arts, humanities, languages, sciences, and social sciences. It enrolls nearly 2,900 undergraduate students and employs about 300 professors. Annually, nearly half of Smith juniors study abroad. Founded in 1871 by Sophia Smith (who left funds in her will to create a women's college) and her minister John Greene, the school also offers graduate degrees in areas such as education, social work, and fine arts. Smith's notable alumna include chef Julia Child, author and political commentator Molly Ivins, and feminist icon Gloria Steinem.
