Description Colgate won't keep your teeth clean but it may prevent brain rot. The university is a liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 2,800 students. Most are undergrads, though the school has a small graduate program that offers master's degrees in arts and teaching. Colgate offers some 50 fields of study including biology, political science, and psychology. The school was founded in 1819 as the Baptist Education Society, a seminary in Hamilton, New York. Baptists in New York City, including soap maker William Colgate, consolidated their seminary with the Hamilton school a few years later. After nearly 70 years of involvement and service by the Colgate family, the school became known as Colgate in 1890.
