Charleston may be known for its churches, but its colleges are right up there too. The College of Charleston, one of the oldest universities in the nation, is a state-supported institution emphasizing areas of study in the arts and sciences, education, and business. The school enrolls more than 11,500 undergraduates and graduates who study in some 45 major fields. The College of Charleston was founded in 1770 by a group that included three future signers of the Declaration of Independence.
