I have been working at Calpine full-time (More than 3 years)
The pay is good relative to the market, benefits are solid.
It's really not a terrible place to work, but company culture I think could use some CPR. I came here from a small company, 30ish people, and the culture here is very stiff. I get that it's a big energy company, but when you walk around and no one says hello, it's an issue. Of course that's not everyone. But I was once in the elevator with a director, and when I told him good morning, he completely ignored me... and I wasn't even slightly surprised by that interaction.
Advice to Management
Overall, it's not a bad place to work. A drastic culture change (and maybe some fun) would give this place some life.
Standard process...apply online, get an interview and wait. Very relaxed interview and plant tour. However, my main complaint was the communication process. Was told it would take 3-4 weeks to hear if I had an offer. Asked for updates at week 3 or 4 from corporate HR and was getting blown off by HR woman. Emailed corporate HR again at week 6 asking for an update. 2 hours later I have a generic 'thanks but no thanks' rejection email in my inbox. Maybe I'm old school but I expected to get a phone call or, at the very least, a personalized email. I feel it is very impersonal to send rejection emails like that.
